comunicato stampa

With the exhibition Lebbeus Woods, ON-line, the Museum for Architectural Drawing presents a selection of exception works by architectural theoretician, draughtsman, teacher and architect Lebbeus Woods (1940–2012). Curated by his long time friend and partner Christoph a. Kumpusch, the exhibition will also introduce a number of works that have never been on public display before. The focus is on the remarkable representations of architectonic and urban worlds that Woods created at the beginning of his career. These pencil and ink drawings epitomize most of Woods’ explorations and reinterpretations of both real and imaginary cities, testifying to his never abating aim to expose the transformative and expressive power of architecture.

For the first time, Lebbeus Woods‘ project 4 Cities & Beyond (1982–83) – including the series A City (1987) and Centricity (1987–88) –, representations of Region M (1984), Underground Berlin (1988) and designs for a Meta-Institute (1994–95) will all be exhibited together. Over these panoramas, his Geomagnetic Flying Machines (1988) – fragile, metal-covered and entwined in cables – appear to be hovering relentlessly.

By highlighting various aspects of his signature style, the exhibition honors Woods’ dedication to consider drawing as a highly effective and evocative instrument for imparting the teachings and ideas of architecture. Colour, contrast and shading serve towards the drawings’ clarity and atmosphere, which – being simultaneously powerful and shatterable in their appearance – have been infused with the artists’ warmth and humanity. They also communicate the vision, that drawings can express things that cannot be put into words.

Special thanks to Kristin Feireiss, who not only endorsed Lebbeus Woods and several of his projects, but was also responsible for his first exhibition with Aedes in Berlin, for her support so that this exhibition could to take place.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue.

On the 28. June at 4pm, a symposium will be held at the Aedes Network Campus Berlin, accompanying the collaboration between the latter and the Tchoban Foundation. We are delighted to have Hani Rashid, Kimberli Meyer, Dr. Neil Spiller and Dr. Christoph a. Kumpusch as our speakers. The symposium and discussion will be hosted by Dr Mark Morris.
