Architecture is making its presence felt in cutting-edge fashion. The
pliable metals, membrane structures, lightweight glasses and plastics
used in building construction are creeping onto the catwalk. As they do
so, their impact on recent fashion design has resulted in innovations
described as wearable 'dwellings' that can function as shelter as well
as clothing. At the same time, architects are borrowing the techniques
of pleating, draping, cutting and stapling from traditional tailoring to
design buildings that are flexible, interactive, inflatable and even
portable.
Against this background, The Fashion of Architecture presents a diverse
range of projects that investigate the contemporary axis between
architecture and fashion in considerable depth. Designs by fashion
visionaries will showcase a range of ideas, techniques and materials
that have more in common with architecture than mainstream fashion.
Exhibits include fibreglass dresses by Hussein Chalayan, inflatable
fashions from Michiko Koshino, Junya Watanabe's sweeping origami
silhouettes, Kei Kagami's wearable hydraulic dresses, C P Company's
Transformables range of inhabitable sportswear, couture from Arkadius
conceived as superstructures rather than clothing, and Pia Myrvold's
Paris Identity collaborations with Jean Nouvel. Parallel to the fashion
exhibits, installations by architects will expose architecture's role in
the formation of fashion identities, as revealed in the flowing folds of
Zaha Hadid's sinuous environments. Supple surfaces move from fashion to
architecture in the inflatable pavilions created by Veech Media
Architecture, and find expression in the twisting façades pioneered by
Karel Vollers and in the meandering spirals of Comme des Garçons
inverted skirts. Artworks by Lucy Orta combine portable architecture
with all-weather wardrobes as she imbues fashion with humanitarian aims,
while a film installation by photographer and filmmaker Michael Maiers
captures the exchanges taking place between fashion and the built
environment. Probing and far-reaching in its content, The Fashion of
Architecture is the most comprehensive visual expression of this
exciting area to date.
The exhibition is curated by Bradley Quinn, author and journalist, whose
book about the dynamic relationship between the two disciplines was
recently published by Berg. With exhibition design and graphic
expressions produced by Bleed, The Fashion of Architecture promises to
be a landmark presentation of this fascinating genre.
