Order/Chaos features a new series of acrylic on canvas paintings by the
Southern California based artist. Using tools more commonly found in
automobile customizing, Trivitt combines the gesture and movement of the
Abstract Expressionists with the colorful and precise lines of the
'California Cool' school of art. Making each painting out of thousands of
individual lines in multiple colors, the artist creates works that are full
of energy and movement, yet balanced and harmonious, creating a satisfying
and visceral experience for the viewer.
Each canvas is laid on the floor in Trivitt's studio and painted from above.
'I find it connects me to the work much better than using an easel or a
wall,' says the artist, 'and not just because strands of my hair keep
falling into the paint.' A base of color is applied to each canvas until the
surface is smooth and shiny. Then come the many thousands of lines applied
by hand that make up each layer of color. The colors are mixed with an
iridescent medium to give them a bright sheen. The movement of the lines and
the unique color combinations give the works a sense of playfulness. 'I've
finally gotten old enough to learn how to paint like a child,' says Trivitt,
'so I just want to take my big box of colors and have some fun.'
