Jerwood Drawing Prize
17 September - 26 October 2014

2014 marks the 20th Jerwood Drawing Prize, the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. Selected from original drawings, the Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence and promoting and celebrating the breadth of contemporary drawing practice within the UK.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is a joint initiative, led by Professor Anita Taylor, Dean of Bath School of Art and Design at Bath Spa University and supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
Drawings are chosen for the exhibition through an open submission process, and considered for inclusion by a panel of three selectors with the perspectives of practitioner, curator and writer. The selection panel changes each year, and the resulting exhibitions reflect the differing interests of each panel.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize 2014 includes 51 drawings by 46 practitioners selected from 3,234 submitted works.

Bonita Alice, Ian Andrews, Jemma Appleby, Alan Bond, Jessie Brennan, Alison Carlier, Sarah Casey, Mark Cazalet, Alex Chalmers, Ara Choi, David Cooper, David Rees Davies, Michael Ditchburn, Shaun Dolan, Susannah Douglas, Hannah Downing, Sara Dudman, Gary Edwards, Hilary Ellis, Uta Feinstein, Annette Fernando, Freya Gabie, Hugh Gillan, Tricia Gillman, Elaine Griffin, Michael Griffiths, Ben Hart, Alan Hathaway, Charlotte Hodes, Stephen Hunter, Jonathan Huxley, Alzbeta Jaresova, Aileen Keith, Shivangi Ladha, Laurie Lax, Zoe Maslen, Kate Morrell, Sigrid Müller, Hitesh Natalwala, Peter Ole Rasmussen, Katie Sollohub, Lexi Strauss, Sally Taylor, Katy Wallwork, Diane Welford, Daniel Wheeler

The selectors for the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2014 were:
Gavin Delahunty, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Dallas Museum
Dr Janet McKenzie, Author and Co-editor of Studio International
Alison Wilding RA, Artist

"The selection was characterised by both instinct and certainty. Indeed the works seemed to choose us, to assert their presence amid the great volume of other works. The drawings chosen stood out by virtue of their capacity to move the viewer emotionally or metaphysically. They also had a discernible candour or resonance that distinguished them from the vast range of works. Drawing is the most direct form of expression yet asserts a very subtle power; it is often an art of absence, a whisper as opposed to a declaration; a suggestion rather than a certitude. The selection process was a remarkable one, for its clear-sighted nature, for the certainty of choice with which the judges concurred."

Dr Janet McKenzie

“The brief of over 3,000 drawings to be looked at in less than two days made for an intense but exhilarating experience, and surprisingly there was plenty of time for forensic discussions amongst ourselves. I found my response to some of the drawings to be instinctive and visceral. The show will be intriguing, there are some beautiful drawings and some surprises.”

Alison Wilding RA

The prizes, which will be awarded to the winning artists at a ceremony on Tuesday 16 September 2014, are a First Prize of £8,000, Second Prize of £5,000 and two Student Awards of £2,000 each.

A special exhibition celebrating the 20th year runs concurrently at Jerwood Gallery in Hastings until 15 October 2014. Drawn Together: Artist as Selector features works by previous selectors of the Jerwood Drawing Prize and is curated by Professor Anita Taylor, Director and co-Founder of the Jerwood Drawing Prize since 1994.

Backdrop Comission: The Grantchester Pottery
17 September 2014 - 31 August 2015

Jerwood Visual Arts is delighted to present the inaugural Backdrop Commission by The Grantchester Pottery, an artistic collaboration between sculptor Giles Round and painter Phil Root.

Established in 2011, The Grantchester Pottery takes the structural framework of a decorative arts studio. Drawing upon historical precedents such as Rebel Arts Centre, Hammer Prints and Atelier Martine for a point of conceptual departure, The Grantchester Pottery produce decorative domestic objects including utilitarian ceramics, woven textiles, painted furniture and murals. They seek to substitute, wherever possible, the expressive quality of the artist’s handling for the deadness of mechanical reproduction.

For the Backdrop Commission The Grantchester Pottery have developed a new artwork, Kyoto, 2004, a large-scale reproduction of a hand-painted collage that utilises a cut-out technique characteristic of the duo’s collaborative practice. The collaged composition reflects Jerwood Spaces’ commitment to nurturing theatre and dance by considering the illusory nature of the stage, drawing inspiration from the painted stage works of David Hockney and Japanese architecture. The resulting artwork, reminiscent of early modernist compositions, recreates an interior as flat abstraction.

Printed onto aluminum panels, the piece is 6 metres wide by 2.4 metres high and sits adjacent to the glasshouse and Café 171. The Backdrop Commission initiative references the activities and community of Jerwood Space, which is widely recognised as one of the best rehearsal spaces for theatre and dance in the country.
