Visions of the Near Future

Jordan Baseman, Christine Borland, Adam Chodzko, Dorothy Cross, Richard Dedomenici, Peter Fend, Kerry Morrison, Jane Prophet, Third Angel and Alexa Wright.

A major new project which emerges from the discussions and realisations of artists and scientists working together collaboratively. The project strands explore the languages and assumptions of art and science and look at what happens when these research interests fuse. Rather than addressing science fiction utopias and dystopias, Wonderful presents visions of the future as it may be in five, ten or thirty years because it is informed by today's developments. Wonderful investigates science within a broad cultural and philosophical framework, inviting visitors to consider their own position in relation to ethical issues emerging from current developments in technology and scientific research.

The project includes three new live works co-commissioned by Arnolfini. Choice by Kerry Morrison and Dr Alicia Prowse is presented as part of the exhibition. Every year millions of pounds are spent trying to eradicate plant species introduced to the UK from overseas, which are regarded as damaging. The pair's interactive work focuses on Himalayan Balsam, one of Britain's top invasive species, and highlights the human factor within the ever-changing landscape. The two other commissions, by Third Angel and Richard Dedomenici, are shown as lecture presentations - details page 5. Video work by Third Angel is also being shown in the exhibition.

The Wonderful project also encompasses an educational CDROM, conference, publication and website:
