'Simulated Patient'
Lisson Gallery announces its third solo exhibition of work by Christine
Borland.
Christine Borland's new work continues to be directed by the artists'
dedicated research into science and medicine. Moving away from the
historical references of earlier works, she examines areas of current
medical practice and the ethics and consequences of medical decision making.
Borland has been researching the relatively new area of Communication
Skills, which has become a key element in the education of medical students.
Her experience of young medics learning to employ body language,
paralinguistics (intonation/hesitation/gesture) and silence in communication
with patients is the basis for the work in this exhibition.
In Observational Skills, Mirroring, Empathetic Listening, Paralinguistics
the visitor is invited to take part in role playing situations similar to
those used by the students and their tutors. In another work, Simulated
Patient, Borland directly employs CCTV footage from practice sessions,
usually relayed to another room for evaluation, which focuses on the 'use of
silence¹ in the irregular interactions between medical students and their
actor patients. We are in an unusual position where it is impossible not to
empathise with the doctor, while feeling an inevitable cathartic relief at
the enactment of these tragic scenarios under controlled, but convincing
circumstances.
Finally, in 'Home Testing', Borland revisits the territory of genetics and
eugenics through placing the viewer in a game playing situation once again,
converting baffling statistics into something more personal and tangible.
Born in Glasgow in 1965, Christine Borland has exhibited extensively in
Europe and the U.S. in numerous group and solo shows including Art Gallery
of Toronto; Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee, Scotland; De Appel, Amsterdam;
Art Gallery of York University, Toronto; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston,
and Dunkers Kulturhus, Sweden.
