Art6 Gallery, Richmond's newest addition to the Broad Street Cultural Corridor, will be moving into 6 East Broad Street on March 1, the day that the building will be vacated by Artspace Gallery.
The premiere show 'Artists Collect, Too, II' at art6 will open the same week and features significant works from the collections of the six founding directors of art6.
Selections from the private collections of Henrietta Near, Chuck Scalin, Thomas M. Humphrey, Doug Hayes, Marian Hollowell, and curator Mitzi Humphrey are showcased. There will be a First Friday opening reception March 5, 7 – 10 pm.
Internationally known Nigerian printmaker Bruce Onobrakpeya; Sister Mary Corita, the world's most famous artist nun from the 'fifties and 'sixties; and Mexican artists Crispin Valladares and Francisco Toledo are mingled in 'Artists Collect, Too, II' with a wide variety—indeed almost a 'who's who' or survey of the past four decades--of Richmond-based artists. Two drawings by Theresa Pollak, two photographs by Thomas Daniel, and two prints by David Freed are featured. Several paintings from the 1980's 'food' period of Sheryl Humphrey are shown, and works by well-known veteran artists Myron Helfgott, Etta Edwards, Anne Savedge, Willie Anne Wright, and Bea Klein are included.
Important names from Richmond's art history, such as Laura Pharis, Gerald Donato, Philip Wetton, Roomy Pak, Norman Akroyd, Gail McKennis, Davi Det Hompson, and Aggie Zed are highlighted in this multi-faceted exhibition.
Among the many other notable artists showcased are Sidney Schatzky, Nicholas Cossitt, Gloria Blades, Steven Glass, Marilyn Bevilaqua, Aline Curran, Bob Hatcher,Warren Corrado, Peter Ydeen, Eleanor Belknap Humphrey, John Bailey, Pam Shelor, Mary Melton, Nancy Rice, Janice McMurray, Kitty Johnson, Kathleen Westkaemper, Santa Sergio DeHaven, Rachel Sawan White, Mary Watt New, Jean Kellogg, Jane Ware, Douglas Jones, and Lorraine Brevig.
As part of the opening month's events at Art6 a new poetry and prose reading series will begin, under the direction of Marian Hollowell. Called 'art6 Writers Read,' the evening will feature readings of poetry and short stories by art6 members. The first 'art6 Writers Read' is Saturday, March 27, at 8:00 pm, with a reception for the writers to follow.
Art6 will be open 12 – 4 pm, Wednesday through Sunday, March 5 – 28.
