comunicato stampa

In 2013, Paris-based artist Faycal Baghriche was invited to Los Angeles, leading to his first visit to the city. During his stay he presented a lecture at Machine Project, entitled "You Talk the Talk". This hour-long performance presented Baghriche’s first impressions of Los Angeles’ urban organization, as well as his observations on the behavior of its inhabitants, focusing on the daily performative practices that are displayed on every corner of public space.

"Walk the Walk" is a result of "You Talk the Talk".

The exhibition serves as a space to continue a conversation that took place a year ago. The resulting large-scale installation stems from Baghriche’s engagement with Los Angeles and his observations on the sphere of everyday public life here. It addresses – and plays with – notions of visibility/ invisibility, representation/ replication, and the impact (and exchange value) of poetic and performative acts in urban space.

Faycal Baghriche (born 1972, Skikda, Algeria) lives and works in Paris, France. He is currently co-founder and co-director of La Villa du Lavoir, an artist residency in Paris, and a founding member of the curatorial structure, Le Commissariat.

Over the past 10 years, Baghriche has exhibited widely both in France and abroad. He exhibited in Brooklyn Euphoria, New York and Dashanzi Art Festival, Beijing (both 2004), and later La force de l’Art, France’s 2009 triennial showcase of contemporary talent. He has participated in various large-scale exhibitions in France, such as La Nuit Blanche in Paris and Le Printemps de Septembre in Toulouse, and has presented his work at various institutions including CAPC Bordeaux, the Museum of Modern Art Paris, the Foundation Vasarely, La Villa Arson, Contemporary Art Museum Huston, Outpost for Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Bielefelder Kunstverein, Germany, Al Riwaq Art Space, Bahrain and The Museum of Modern Art in Algers. In 2011, Baghriche participated in the 54th Venice Biennial as part of “The Future of a Promise,” and recently exhibited at the Gwanju Biennale and in the Dakar Biennial in 2014. In 2015, he will present work at the Armory Show in New York, along with Lamia Joreige through Taymour Grahne Gallery.

In 2014, Baghriche was invited to Los Angeles as an artist-in-residence in Paris at your home, a partnership between Mains d’Oeuvre in Saint‐Ouen, France and Machine Project in Los Angeles.

Baghriche holds a national diploma of fine arts from La Villa Arson in Nice, France, a BA in Dramatic Arts from Nice Sophia Antipolis University, France, and a Master’s degree in multimedia creation from The National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France.

This exhibition is the product of a residency supported by the Institut Français.
