A group of talented, newly graduated Danish and international artists are in focus at the prize exhibition EXTRACT, where Kunstforeningen GL STRAND continues the tradition of celebrating the new generation of artists. This time the exhibition gathers six artists and an artist duo, hand-picked from this summer’s graduation exhibitions at leading art academies in the USA, Switzerland and Denmark. With their contributions to EXTRACT the artists are at the same time nominated for the EXTRACT prize, which is awarded to the winner on the actual opening day, 5 December. The prize consists of a travel grant of DKK 50,000 and a solo show at GL STRAND. The recipient of the EXTRACT Prize is nominated each year by an international jury, this year made up of the curator Poppy Bowers from the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the curator Anne Dressen from the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the visual artist John Kørner, and the director of GL STRAND, Helle Behrndt.

Through seven small solo presentations at this year’s EXTRACT, one can experience a wide variety of media such as video, photography, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting and embroidery. Thematically, too, the exhibition covers a rich spectrum that takes us through poetic portraits from the southern states, spectacular interactions, ghostly tableaux, the visual culture of tourism, the psychological dimensions of acoustics, the decadent fantasies of modern life, and geopolitical consequences in South Korea. Despite the great variety in expression and content it can be said of all the artists that they challenge their specific media through a critical and reflective approach to the content material.

EXTRACT constitutes a platform where newly-graduated artists can further develop their work and form new international networks. The artists are selected each year against the background of visits to five graduation exhibitions in Denmark and abroad and with a point of departure in the works the artists have presented there.

This year we have selected artists from the three Danish academies, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, the Jutland Academy of Art in Aarhus and the Funen Academy of Art in Odense, as well as two schools abroad, the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence (RISD), USA, and the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Zürich (ZHdK), Switzerland. Over the years, as the leading art academy in the USA, RISD has trained some of the country’s most important living artists, and annually attracts artists from all over the world. ZHdK enjoys an experimental position in Switzerland and, like RISD, has a large international influx to the Master’s degree course.

The artists at EXTRACT – YOUNG ART PRIZE – CPH 2014 are:
Selini Halvadaki (DK), Jens & Morten (N/DK), Sophia Narrett (USA), Amanda Nedham (CAN/USA), Kika Nicolela (BRA/B), RaMell Ross (USA) og Anna Samsøe (DK)

The EXTRACT Prize is donated by Det Obelske Familiefond.
