km0, Innsbruck

'Assimmetrie Cristallografiche' presents works by Mario Ballocco. Then the work of two young Italian artists, Gianni Moretti and Andrea Mori, which focuses on the journey.

comunicato stampa

On the occasion of its third vernissage, Km0 proposes a new series of important exhibitions. It starts with the solo exhibition Asimmetrie dedicated to Mario Ballocco. Then the work of two young Italian artists, Gianni Moretti and Andrea Mori, which focuses on the journey. In Moretti it is turned into a metaphor of approach and force attempting to define a form, in Mori it is something extremely pragmatic, a sort of learning journey through the nature. At the opening Km0 will be glad to welcome you with a show cooking lead by the artist Andrea Mori, entirely dedicated to local products. The curators will be present and glad to guide you personally through the different exhibitions to discover the artists and their works.

Mario Ballocco
Assimmetrie Cristallografiche

In 1953 Mario Ballocco completes his research on the trilogy Monads, Networks and Grids. At that time the artist from Milan is already well-established and since 1954 with the series Asimmetrie cristallografie and Problemi di totalizzazione he starts a period which introduces to his chromatic studies, both in practice and in theory. The Asymmetries combine formal precision with a rich palette developed each time in different scales of green, azure, grey and black. These structures unveil several sides of a prism which imbues in other similar geometric shapes. This Ballocco´s research, which will continue for five years, becomes essential to the interpretation of his whole artistic path. Among all Ballocco´s projects, this is certainly the less known and at the same time the most intriguing. The resemblances to the contemporary researches of artists like Albers and Bill are evident, even if they lead to an entirely personal result which stands out for an elegant composition that characterise all Ballocco´s works. This exhibition gives the unique opportunity to see about twenty Asymmetries, which gather a comprehensive selection of this fundamental creative phase of the artist from Milan. The exhibition is curated by Klaus Wolbert (President of the VAF Foundation in Frankfurt) and accompanied by a trilingual catalogue, edited by Km0.

Gianni Moretti
Notturlabio

«Nocturnal (or nocturlabe) [from the Latin. nocturlabium, compound word of "nocturnus" and (astro)labium "astrolabe"]. Old astronomical and naval instrument, called also nocturlabe and nocturnal, used to measure the height of the Pole star to the horizon and then the latitude, which corresponds to this height; a particular model, called also “horologium nocturnum” could measure time basing on the relative positions of some circumpolar stars (visible all night long) to the Pole star, as indicated on the picture, and it was still employed during the 18th century» (Dictionary of the Physical Sciences, 1996). Like the nocturnal, this ancient instrument which operates through measurement attempts in low visibility (at night), Gianni Moretti´s works, apply the same method, approaching something difficult to define and enlightening this accordingly. Moretti´s works, even when they are not the Esercizi, try to define, always through a wide margin of risk, not only the approach but also the reached form in itself. The exhibited works, one of the most significant selection from the last years, are perfectly located in the project room of the gallery with its black walls and black floor which ideally recall the night where they give to the visitors some necessary orientation hints and references

Andrea Mori
EIN WANDERER RICHTUNG INNSBRUCK

Andrea Mori was born in 1977. Artist, walker and storyteller, Andrea Mori travels through J. Wolfgang Goethe´s traces again, almost 230 years after the Italian Journey of the German writer. On the contrary, Mori´s journey starts in Northern Italy and finishes after 18 days in Austria, at the heart of Innsbruck, at the gallery Km0. Modern and visionary walker, Mori creates on his way some real “treasure maps”, which in addition to his drawings of the routes, include sketches, some earth and plant samples and scrap of cloth soaked in natural colours, giving to the visitor some useful hints to retrace, even ideally, his learning journey through the nature, allowing them to hunt for the elements collected by the artist on the road. The exhibition shows 18 travel diaries, entirely realised by hand, two big maps on glass, site specific, and several coloured phials, which contain the hidden natural colours. Strongly influenced by some goethean writings and theories, such as Metamorphosis of Plants and other writings about Natural Science, Theory of Colours, Italian Journey, Mori made this trip to Innsbruck as he was 37 years old, exactly like Goethe when he arrived in Italy.During the vernissage the artist will hold his own show cooking with local products.
