The photographs of Juul Hondius possess a disturbing beauty. The body of a man submerged beneath the surface of muddy water (Canal, 2000); a group of people in the back of a truck, covered over by a plastic shield (Plastic, 2001); the sad eyes of a man behind a car window (Man 2, 1999) - every single image contains an unspeakable mystery.

OPENING: Friday 19 March 2004

Until now, Quarantine Series has organised five solo exhibitions by young international
artists. The next exhibition will be the first of a Dutch artist.
We are proud to present a solo exhibition of Juul Hondius (1970, The
Netherlands).
The photographs of Juul Hondius possess a disturbing beauty. The body of a
man submerged beneath the surface of muddy water (Canal, 2000); a group of
people in the back of a truck, covered over by a plastic shield (Plastic,
2001); the sad eyes of a man behind a car window (Man 2, 1999) - every
single image contains an unspeakable mystery.
Recurring themes in Hondius' work are: travelling, mobility, borders,
(illegal) immigration and feelings of (un)safety. At first glance his
photo's seem to be depictions of real situations. However, a closer look
reveals that they are carefully staged scenes. Hondius likes to call them
Å’factions' (fictions based on facts). They are Å’possible real situations'.
The suggestive nature of his work has tempted some writers to relate it to a
political reality and to actual images in the newspapers. Others, seduced by
the hyper-aesthetic quality of his photo's, have connected it with the
glossy imagery of advertisement. Recurring themes in the reviews of Hondius'
work are thus: journalism versus aesthetics, veracity vs. construct,
engagement vs. formalism. The work of Juul Hondius defies the supposed
opposition between these categories, and escapes a one-dimensional reading.
In Quarantine Series Juul Hondius will present a new photographic work,
entitled LEAVE EVERYTHING ON THIS SIDE OF THE WINDOW TO US. Especially for
our exhibition space, he will transform the photograph into a spatial work.
Juul Hondius, born in 1970, The Netherlands, based in Amsterdam. His recent
exhibitions include Galerie Akinci (2003), W139, Amsterdam (1999), Zoo
Galerie, Nantes (2001), Huis Marseille, Amsterdam (2002). In 2000 he was
awarded the Å’Aanmoedigingsprijs Fotografie' by the Amsterdam Fund for the
Arts, in 2003 he received the Charlotte Köhler Prize. This fall he will
participate in an exhibition at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen,
Rotterdam.
