La Galleria Carla Sozzani, a distanza di 20 anni dalla prima mostra, dedica a Arthur Elgort un’antologica dal titolo “Arthur Elgort: The Big Picture” che raccoglie cinque decadi del suo lavoro e comprende molti originali “snapshots”, un nuovo stile che il fotografo americano introdusse nella fotografia di moda.

Nel 1971, quando Elgort produsse il suo primo servizio su British Vogue, fu davvero una svolta sensazionale nel mondo della fotografia di moda. Una ventata di aria fresca con le modelle che si muovevano in assoluta libertà, luci naturali e un pizzico di influenza del reportage.

Le sue giovani e belle modelle erano pochissimo truccate, si comportavano con vivacità e semplicità di fronte alla macchina fotografia e con naturalezza negli spazi aperti: strade urbane, piscine e spiagge, luoghi tipici che definirono il suo stile.
Elgort divenne ben presto uno dei più ammirati ed imitati dai fotografi. La sfida che lanciò con le sue innovative fotografie cambiò l’industria della moda. Le sue idee su ciò che una fotografia di moda fosse, schiuse altre prospettive su come avrebbe potuto essere la fotografia di moda per le generazioni future.

Arthur Elgort pensa che il suo stile spontaneo derivi dalla passione di una vita per la musica e la danza, in particolare per il jazz e il balletto degli anni Trenta e Quaranta. “Alcune delle mie migliori immagini le ho riprese quando non stavo “lavorando”: le modelle che si stavano preparando, la gente nelle strade. Fugaci momenti fra le riprese. Quello è il momento quando si può catturare la gente come davvero è e vedere cosa si cela nelle persone. In quei momenti veri non si può imbrogliare.” Dichiara.
In mostra anche circa ottanta icone della fotografia di moda che Elgort riprese a giovani donne che saranno la prima generazione di supermodelle: Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Patti Hansen, Iman, Linda Evangelista e Karlie Kloss.

Biografia
Arthur Elgort è nato nel 1940 a New York dove è cresciuto. Ha studiato pittura all’Hunter College e, quindi, si è interessato di fotografia. Nel corso della sua lunga carriera ha realizzato le più importante campagne pubblicitarie, anche per le case di moda Chanel, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent. Ha collaborato, e continua a collaborare, per Vogue Francia, Italia, Gran Bretagna e Stati Uniti.
Il suo lavoro è parte delle collezioni permanenti dell’International Center of Photography di New York, del Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra e del Museum of Fine Arts di Houston, Texas.
Elgort ha anche diretto il film Texas Tenor: The Illinois Jacquet Story (1992), e il documentario Colorado Cowboy (1993) che racconta la storia del leggendario cowboy Bruce Ford. Con questo documentario ha vinto il premio Best Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival in 1994.
Nel 2011, Elgort ha ricevuto il Board of Directors’ Special Tribute Award del Council of Fashion Designers of America. Nel 2014, ha pubblicato con l'editore Steidl l’esaustiva monografia “Arthur Elgort: The Big Picture”.

Galleria Carla Sozzani wishes to announce the exhibition Arthur Elgort: The Big Picture after twenty years from the first one. The show encompasses five decades of Arthur Elgort's work, including several original “snapshots”, a style Elgort introduced into the fashion photography vocabulary.

The photographs of Arthur Elgort created a sensation in his 1971 debut in British Vogue. He was a breath of fresh air, wafting into the world of fashion photography with freely moving models, natural light, and a reportage influence. His young and pretty models wore less make-up, were more casual and lively in front of the camera, and moved about freely in outdoor locations such as city street, pools, and beaches which characterized his style. He quickly became one of the best known and most emulated photographers. The risks that he took with his fashion pictures changed the industry. His ideas of what a ‘fashion’ photo was, opened up the possibilities of what fashion photography could be to the next generation.

He attributes much of his spontaneous and liberated style to his lifelong love of music and dance, especially jazz and ballet from the 30s to 40s. As he writes: "Some of my best pictures were taken when I wasn't "working", models getting ready, people on the street, the little moments in between shots. That's when you can really capture people as they truly are and see what's underneath. It's those real moments that just can't be faked."

Alongside his personal work, a select grouping of about eighty photographs including Elgort’s iconic fashion photographs of the young women who would become the first generation of supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Patti Hansen, Iman, Linda Evangelista and Karlie Kloss are also on view.

Arthur Elgort was born in 1940 and raised in New York City. He studied painting at Hunter College and transitioned into photography. In his long career he has worked on major advertising campaigns, as well as on French, Italian, British, and American Vogue, where he continues to work today. He has shot important advertising campaigns for fashion houses including Chanel, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent.

His work is exhibited in the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography in New York, in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.
Elgort has also directed two films, Texas Tenor: The Illinois Jacquet Story (1992), and the documentary Colorado Cowboy (1993) which portrays legendary cowboy Bruce Ford and won the award for Best Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival in 1994.
In 2011 Elgort received the Board of Directors’ Special Tribute Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
In 2014 he published with Steidl the extensive monograph: Arthur Elgort: The Big Picture.
