Rivane Neuenschwander
misunderstandings

Curator Adriano Pedrosa

This is the first survey exhibition of Rivane Neuenschwander in Brazil. Her work has participated in relevant group shows, such as the Venice Biennial, and the New Museum dedicated a solo exhibition to her production in 2010. In misundertsandings, Rivane Neuenschwander will show new pieces together with a restrospective selection of works.

Rivane Neuenschwander's work elaborates the contrast between the contemporary experiences of incompleteness and the modern inheritance of geometrical certainty. In her new series of paintings called "Dazzled," made for this exhibition, the artist has used slugs that move over a surface following the smell of food that she uses to guide them. The slugs leave a slime path like a grid, but the animals twist the angles according to their natural movement. Rivane Neuenschwander uses these paths as the basis for her paintings, contrasting the artist's effort to consolidate the form with the randomic nature of the sluggish movement.

The public will be able to participate in some of the works. In First Love, visitiors can describe the look of their first lover to a composite artist who will produce facial composites to be displayed in the exhibition. In Quem vem lá sou eu/Alarm-Floor, people will walk on a wooden floor with some loose boards that work like pedals, which will play musical instruments underneath this floor as visitors cross the installation, made in collaboration with the music group O Grivo.

misunderstandings is the result of a continuous dialogue between the artist and the curator Adriano Pedrosa, and it will present to the public the production of one of the most intriguing and relevant Brazilian artists today. The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo has been collecting Rivane Neuenschwander's work, and the instituition will thus host this survey of an artist whose work deserves reflection from a Brazilian point of view.

--------

Paulo Bruscky

Curator Felipe Chaimovich

The exhibition will present the work of the conceptual artist Paulo Bruscky. He has been producing since the 1970s, and he has been participating of the network of Fluxus's members ever since. However, during the time of Brazilian dictatorship, he was censored, persecuted and imprisioned, and only recently his work has started to be recognized in his native state of Pernambuco.

Due to this situation, many conceptual works conceived by Paulo Bruscky over the last 40 years have not yet been executed. This exhibition will produce for the first time some of these works, which have existed only as ideas. The show opens with four of his "idea notebooks," where he has been taking notes of his conceptual projects. Among these projects, three of them will be performed during the opening night, and they will be recorded in order to be shown as videos during the exhibition. One of these works is My brain draws like this: Paulo Bruscky will be monitored by a electroencephalogram device, supervised by a neurologist, while he has different feelings and thoughts, which will produce printed results considered by the artist as his works.

Two performances will take place during all the exhibition. In Work Shift, a regular employee of the museum will be working in the exhibition room, with his or her own desk, telephone, computer, etc. In a second continuous performance, a street vendor from the museum's surroundings will also be in the exhibition room selling his or her regular industrialized food. Both works will create an unpredictable relationship among the public and the institution, a theme that interests the artist.

The collection of Paulo Bruscky's works in the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo will also be displayed, showing the continuous attention of the institution towards this relevant artist.
