We are not your Native Informers Series II

1X1 Gallery, Dubai

The dishonesty that arises from the need of discovery and paths taken to achieve that are critiqued in this exhibition where artists come to represent nations other than theirs during Dubai's most busy art week.

comunicato stampa

In Dubai certain scenes are privileged at given moments and we cannot deny immigrant artists bring with them a much needed diversity to an otherwise bland landscape. A few grew up in the Emirates or in near by kingdoms, others escape lives in Iran and the rest are there to sustain their practices from its entrepot economy.
Curators, Collectors, Fairs and Institutions often follow economic successes and economic terms with their pursuits. The 'Global South' arises from a need of representation of burgeoning economies - in geo-political gatherings, forums of business and subsequently in culture. The stereotype and the exotic that arises from the boxing of nationalities and culture leads to a pervert distance one which Janek Simon calls the furthering of distances for the need of an exciting travelogue. The dishonesty that arises from the need of discovery and paths taken to achieve that are critiqued in this exhibition where artists come to represent nations other than theirs during Dubai's most busy art week - Art Dubai, where national representation is the most natural distinguisher.

During the period of the Biennale & the Art Fair, in view of visits by Curators, Collectors, Galleryists, and enthusiasts, we present a selection of works, that are representative of the artists practice but not representative of their nationalities and cultural contexts. The works refute the idea of a visual exotic, arising from the notion proposed by Janek Simon that exoticism furthers distances among people through exaggeration that only befits a travelogue. As participants of an arena that is global, members from Clark House propose their refusal of interests in identity, but rather nihilistically propose their practices not offering the very pleasure that distance allows, even though the works arise from questions of inequality, identities and representation.

Modern Talk: Vali Mahlouji and Sumesh Sharma in conversation with Catherine David

Curator Vali Mahlouji is engaged in archiving, curating and exposing the work of Iranian photographer Kaveh Golestan (the subject of Art Dubai Modern’s project space); his archive includes over 500,000 unseen negatives. Sumesh Sharma is a member of the Bombay-based curatorial collaborative and artist union Clark House Initiative whose practice involves the investigation of modernist histories, representation and visibility. This special Art Dubai Modern talk, chaired by curator Catherine David, explores the complexities of preserving, reading and exhibiting artists’ archives.

Location: Art Dubai Modern, Mashreq Lounge

Clark House Initiative is a curatorial collaborative and a union of artists based in Bombay.
Clark House curates a series of programs at Gallery 1x1 Dubai searching for intersections of commonality across a proposed solidarity described as the Global South. The exhibition program searches for those intersections in a city that is home to an undecided multiculturalism brought about by economic opportunities and a large aviation network that allows people from Africa, Asia and South America to assemble in Dubai. The program is curated by Zasha Colah and Sumesh Sharma in conversation with Malini Gulrajani. This collaboration came into being at the initiative of the Bombay-based artist Justin Ponmany.

1X1 Art Gallery
Founded in 1996 by Malini Gulrajani, 1x1 Art Gallery has established itself as the hub of Indian Contemporary Art in Dubai. The gallery provides established and emerging artists with a platform for projects and exhibitions while engaged in an exchange of ideas with the international art community. Since its conception the exhibition program at 1x1 has been supported by a series of serious publications both documenting the exhibitions as well as solo publications on artists represented by the gallery.
