Paintings on plexiglass by Dave Geraghty. All of the images in auto-memory are based on memories from Dave Geraghty's past; memories that are not whole but contain enough elements so they can be completed within the artist's mind. Dave begins each piece by recalling thoughts and images, mostly nature and landscapes that are personal to him.

All of the images in auto-memory on view at Brooklyn Fire Proof, Inc. from
April 2 Â May 1, 2004 are based on memories from Dave Geraghty's past;
memories that are not whole but contain enough elements so they can be
completed within the artist's mind. Dave begins each piece by recalling
thoughts and images, mostly nature and landscapes that are personal to him.
Eventually like autopilot, Geraghty lets his subconscious take over, helping
him to create an altered reality, or ultimately a physical memory resulting
in a final painting that the viewer sees.
Dave wants the viewer to relate to his work in very general ways, as if the
viewer has been there before or had a similar experience. Nature and
landscapes have always had a powerful impact on the artist. 'I find myself
painting memories of them in order to escape from the city, especially when
I can't get away or when I want to remember a certain time in my life when
things were different.' The city has influenced his life greatly, and by
using materials like plexiglass, the artist experiences the city and nature
in his own personal way.
The plexiglass fluctuates as barrier and entry into each piece. The plexi
is rather seductive, creating a sense of airiness or depth that other flat
surfaces may lack. Often glossy and sometimes a bit hazy and faded, the
layered texture of the plexiglass reflects the artist's mood or the specific
memory related to the work. Some images are more photographic and others
more abstract. Dave uses several different techniques to create his work
including airbrushing, sanding, scraping, and layering paint and plexi on
top of plexi.
