The Cage Series
Emerging German photographer Michael Schnabel makes his U.S. solo debut at Bank. Schnabel's acclaimed photographic body of work, The Cage Series showcases an ongoing photographic project documenting the interiors of zoo cages built in the late 1800's – 1970's throughout Germany and Switzerland.
Photographed in large format, these C-prints depict a realist aesthetic investigation, revealing an inherent beauty that is both seductive and ominous. Initially deceptive to the eye, these large empty interiors captivate as striking minimalist architecture laced with pools of cool light, evoking a quiet contemplative sensibility. Exposing trace evidence of an inhabitance, these interiors slowly reveal the austere reality of archaic cages from a zoo.
A catalog of The Cage Series will accompany the exhibition with an introduction by Christopher Miles.
Michael Schnabel's work has been the subject of numerous publications such as Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazine, Creative Review and Photographie. The Cage Series has been the recipient of various awards such as Communication Arts, The One Show and the Association of Photographers, London.
Michael Schnabel's Cage Series will also be exhibited at Scope Los Angeles.
