Fifty Years of Works on Paper
Cy Twombly (b. 1928) is considered to be one of the greatest living American artists. Throughout his 50-year career his work has received widespread admiration and international critical praise.
Twombly's work defies easy categorisation. Subverting traditional distinctions between painting and drawing, brush and pencil-work, written words and images, he has made a highly individual contribution to the history of twentieth-century art.
On the occasion of his 75th birthday Twombly has collaborated on an eagerly anticipated survey of his work on paper, complementing retrospectives of his painting at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1995 and of his sculpture at the Kunsthalle Basel and The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., in 2000 and 2001.
This exhibition brings together approximately 60 works ranging from his early drawings of 1953 to his new colourful, large paintings on paper, which were executed in Gaeta, Italy, where the artist now works for most of the year. Forming part of Twombly's personal archive, most of these works have never been exhibited or published before.
The Serpentine exhibition is the first major presentation of his work in a London public gallery for over 15 years and offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the outstanding artistic visions of our time.
Cy Twombly has been curated by Julie Sylvester, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg. It opened at The State Hermitage Museum and toured to the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, before its presentation at the Serpentine Gallery.

The Serpentine Sweatshops continue during Cy Twombly. Convened by Lisa Le Feuvre and Edgar Schmitz, the Sweatshops are a series of events that work as a factory for ideas and debate. This informal series of discussions invites writers, artists, curators and theorists to explore and develop current research interests. For Cy Twombly, the panel will revisit Roland Barthes' 1979 article on Twombly, Sagesse de l'art (The Wisdom of Art), and consider how this text relates to the work some 30 years later.

Cy Twombly's art embraces a rich philosophical and poetic tradition. In The Optical Unconscious, MIT (1993), Rosalind Krauss writes of the artist's inscription as an agitated ‘graffito', a mark-making process that occupies the painted surface with traces of history, language and mythology.
The perfomative aspect of Twombly's work was observed by Roland Barthes in The Wisdom of Art, 1979. He describes the creation of the artist's paintings and drawings as the staging of an ‘event', informed by place and culture.
In this one-day conference chaired by Jon Bird, invited speakers will explore trace and reference in the art of Cy Twombly. The conference will also discuss the artist's relation to both past and contemporary artists and the problems and possibilities his work poses for the language of art criticism.
