Alterations. For the exhibition the artist presents photography, painting, drawing and sculpture. She is particularly known for her sculptural works in the public space.
The Ukraine artist Zhanna Kadyrova (1981, lives and works in Kiev) is showing her first solo show called “Alterations” in the German spoken context at Kunstraum Innsbruck. She works with various media: photography, painting, drawing and sculpture, but she is particularly known for her sculptural works in the public space. She creates giant outdoor sculptures made of ceramic, breaks, concrete and stones. Further she has elaborated her own recognizable artistic style distinguished by using fractured tiles.
Her use of the medium alludes to its history as an ideological art form during the Soviet era and its more decorative function following Ukrainian independence. Centre piece of the exhibition is the work Crowd (2012-14). Crowd is a compilation of 33 glass panels with each panel containing a collage of one daily international newspaper dated 2012. Taking the newspapers, Kadyrova cuts out all portraits of people, re-composes them, juxtaposing persons of different social status, political position or religion side by side within the original frame of the newspaper page.
Losing all reference to the text and the language apart from the title of the paper that “frames” the crowds in a geographical culture context each collage becomes a representation of a mass of people as the installation entirety represents a portrait of a crowd. The work in a way becomes a symbol for on-going protests around the world and reflects the role of mass media within those conflicts.

Zhanna Kadyrova
graduated from Taras Shevchenko State Art School, Kyiv. She was awarded by the Special Prize – Future Generation Art Prize 2014; Main prize PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013; Kazimir Malevich Artist Award 2012, Sergey Kuryokhin Modern Art Award for Public Art 2012; Grand Prix – Kyiv Sculpture Project 2012; Special Prize – PinchukArtCentre Prize 2011. Kadyrova is a member of the R.E.P. group and Penoplast musical performance group. Her works have been extensively exhibited worldwide, including the 5th Moscow Biennale, the 55th and 56th Venice Biennale at the Ukraine Pavillon, “Nouvelles Vagues”, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (all 2013). She is represented by GALLERIA CONTINUA, San Gimignano / Beijing / Le Moulin / Habana.
