Kristin Calabrese
Group show curated by Kristin Calabrese. The title, 'Carpetbag + Cozyspace' is a two-part title. Dictionar.com defines carpetbag as 'a traveling bag made of carpet fabric that was used chiefly in the United States during the 19th century'. This refers to the mode of transport with which the show will be taken to New York: in thrift store luggage, on busses and through baggage checks and in the belly of an airplane, to be taxi-ed to the gallery. The second definition of carpetbag is an adjective: 'following the practices or characteristic of carpetbaggers'. 'A carpetbagger is 'an outsider who seeks power or success presumptuously; 'after the Civil War the carpetbaggers from the north tried to take over the south'.' 'Cozyspace' is the other half of the title. The works chosen for this exhibition are, when taken as a whole, intended to convey a feeling of cozy-ness: lots of bright primary and secondary colors and puffy shapes that allow the viewer to feel safe, contented, and happy.
