Daria Melnikova

KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin

A performance conceived as an embodiment of Melnikova's work during her time in residence at KW. An installation composed of materials and aesthetics reminiscent of a cross between an office cubicle and a break room.

comunicato stampa

KW’s artist-in-residence Daria Melnikova invites you to meet Roy, the outgoing entrepreneur who has played a major role in her work at KW. Roy is throwing an informal get-together for all his friends; please join him for drinks and conversations. Daria Melnikova is the recipient of the first kim? Residency Award, organized by kim? Contemporary Art Centre.

The performance is conceived as an embodiment of Daria Melnikova’s work during her time in residence at KW, a project still in progress. The work itself is a 3-dimensional construction, an installation composed of materials and aesthetics reminiscent of a cross between an office cubicle and a break room.

Blocks of homemade cheese supplement the construction. The material was selected for its outward shape, specifically the form of Caciocavallo, which brings to mind cartoon-style moneybags. It contrasts to the technical aluminum tubes used, maintaining the balance between the artificial/synthetic and the natural/live materials of the structure. Its etymology is also involved – “big cheese” – an important person, “cheese” (informal) – money.

The performance brings the space’s fictional occupant, its worker, to life for a social interaction: it introduces Roy. Roy is a “big cheese” - the owner of Roy’s Enterprise, a finance and consulting company that aims to provide brighter futures (the company slogan: Say “Cheese!” to the future).

The annual kim? Residency Award is a residency programme for an exceptionally promising Latvian artist or an artist duo. The winner of the first kim? Residency Award (Daria Melnikova) spent a period from May to August, 2015 in KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin. In 2016 the winner will be able to participate in the ISCP International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York and in 2017 the residency host will be Gasworks, Gallery, Studios and International Residency Programme in London.
