Zeitgeschichten (Time Histories). A keen observer of the political events of her time and attuned to the history and development of our culture and society, Darboven created a substantial body of works that can be read as comments on current events, but also as an homage to great poets, philosophers, scientists, politicians and artists.

The exhibition shows the aesthetic diversity and the large array of media in Hanne Darboven’s oeuvre. However, the two venues explore different aspects. The main focus is on Darboven’s characteristic serial writings and drawings, her early minimalist works, which include pictures made up of different materials and constructional drawings, and also musical compositions in which she translated numeral systems into sequences of musical notes, and filmic works. Furthermore, her sculptural work and object art, and to date never shown three-dimensional wooden structures created during the last three years of the artist’s life – on the basis of early constructions from the middle of the 1960s – form a work-immanent bracket. To help understand the artist’s conceptual cosmos, the exhibition also incorporates materials from her spacious studio and home – a seemingly cyclopaedic archive of objects.
Parallel to Hanne Darboven. Zeitgeschichten (Time Histories) in the Bundeskunsthalle, Hanne Darboven. Aufklärung (Enligthenment) will be on display at the Haus der Kunst in Munich from 18 September 2015 to 14 February 2016. The retrospective in Bonn and Munich shows not only the great variety of the artist's characteristic writing-based works, but also the scope of her object art. Materials from her spacious studio and home—a seemingly encyclopedic archive of objects—help viewers to understand the artist's conceptual cosmos.
Hanne Darboven (1941–2009), the great conceptual artist, observed the political developments of her times with a watchful eye and created extensive works that can also be interpreted as comments on day-to-day events. Likewise, her fascinating and stylistically diverse oeuvre reflects the evolvement of our history, culture, and society. As a tribute to poets, philosophers, politicians, and artists, the aesthetics of her serial works continue to set standards. Her collective work is defined not only by its linking of art, politics, society, and the private living environment, but also by the connection it draws between different forms of expression, such as literature, visual arts, film, and music. By interweaving texts, photographs, postcards, and cross sums, she merged the past and "today" in a collage. Its message is conveyed in an infinite number of implicit chronicles.
"Sometimes it takes two institutions to adequately recognise the significance of an artist's oeuvre in a retrospective. This is especially true in the case of Hanne Darboven. Her work is a uniquely compelling argument for the proposition that a maximum of quantity can also generate a maximum of quality," says Rein Wolfs.
Hanne Darboven. Aufklärung–Zeitgeschichten (Hanne Darboven. Enlightenment–Time Histories), a retrospective in two parts, is a collaborative project between the Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn and the Haus der Kunst, Munich, in association with the Hanne Darboven Foundation, Hamburg.
The catalogue documents both exhibitions. Published in two editions (German/English) by Prestel, it includes contributions by Elke Bippus, Thomas Ebers, Okwui Enwezor, Zdenek Felix, Wolfgang Marx, Miriam Schoofs and Rein Wolfs. (ISBN 978-3-7913-5499-6)
