Jane Harris

PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS

Kontainer Gallery is proud to present an installation of paintings and
drawings of Jane Harris, UK.
Working within the pre-set format of one or more ellipses inside the
rectangle of the canvas edge, Jane Harris plays with the pre-conceptions
of late Modernist ideals. The initial relationships within these
compositions seem to center around order and regularity, yet the
methodical iterations of the brush marks, and their change in size and
direction from one part of the surface to another, disrupt and distort
this interaction. The boundaries between ellipse and rectangular ground
become starkly emphasized, causing a dissonance between different sections
of the work. Through the formalization of the gestural brush marks Harris
invokes the de-formalization of the balance and symmetry within the
paintings.
Jane Harris has been widely exhibited throughout Europe including in solo
shows at Anthony O'Day, London, Gallerie Hollenbach, Stuttgart and Jack
Shainman in New York.
Selected group shows include "The John Moores 19" (prize winner), "About
Vision: New British Painting in the 90s" MOMA, Oxford and touring "Force
Fields" Hayward Gallery, London and in 2001 "Once Again", John Hansard
(curating and exhibiting, with Bruce Nauman and Mona Hatoum among others).
In 2005 Jane Harris will have her first solo museum show at Aldrich Museum
of Contemporary Art, CT, curated by Richard Klein.
