Two exhibitions

IVAM Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Valencia

For the first time, Barbara Eichhorn takes up the challenge of painting especially for an exhibition the 80-metre length of the wall of the Sala de la Muralla of the IVAM. The installation is complemented with a selection of drawings on paper made with charcoal and pencil from photographs taken by herself or cut out of newspapers and magazines, with which she produces the traditional themes of her work such as childhood, origins, the family, her children and woods. The exhibition of Wenzel Ziersch is the first to be devoted to this artist in Spain, and also the first in a museum. The show presents a selection of twenty works on a variety of supports, such as glass, paper, panels, mirrors, perspex, card and pieces on paper, on which, rather than drawing, he writes again and again, gradually producing practically monochrome surfaces on which blacks, greys and whites subtly mingle.

comunicato stampa

The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) presents for the first time in Spain a joint exhibition of the German artists Barbara Eichhorn and Wenzel Ziersch, from 6th May to 4th July 2004.

For the first time, Barbara Eichhorn (1965, Freising, Germany) takes up the challenge of painting especially for an exhibition the 80-metre length of the wall of the Sala de la Muralla of the IVAM. The installation is complemented with a selection of drawings on paper made with charcoal and pencil from photographs taken by herself or cut out of newspapers and magazines, with which she produces the traditional themes of her work such as childhood, origins, the family, her children and woods.

Faithful to charcoal as a medium and using the wood as her subject since she made her first drawing on the wall at the Kupferstichkabinett der Akademie der Bildenen Künste in Vienna, Barbara Eichhorn's intimiste drawings have also found a place on the white walls of galleries and museums. The fact that she draws straight on to the wall shows the novel concept Barbara Eichhorn has of drawing as a large-format art, at the same time as it permits her to portray her woods and landscapes with a grandiosity and magnitude that other mediums would not allow. The catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition contains pictures of her intervention at the IVAM and 60 large-format drawings on paper.

The exhibition of Wenzel Ziersch (1965, Munich, Germany) is the first to be devoted to this artist in Spain, and also the first in a museum. With the aid of a pencil, a marker pen, a fine pencil or a steel point, bandaged so as to protect his hands, Wenzel Ziersch reproduces passages from the Bible, in some series exclusively chapter 13 of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, until the text completely covers the picture surface and the writing becomes illegible.

In his early works Wenzel Ziersch reproduced texts taken from newspapers or writings by artists who interested him, but it is in the Bible that he has really found the source of literary inspiration that enables him to carry out an artistic project in which the word is transformed into a visually beautiful object irrespective of its linguistic content. The catalogue published includes pictures and essays about his work by the curator, Maita Canamás, and by Miguel Ángel Velasco.
