comunicato stampa

We would like to invite you to the press meeting for the exhibition ‘A | Ayşe Erkmen & Ann Veronica Janssens’, attended by the curators and artists, at 11 am on Thursday 29 October. At the request of the City of Ghent, Ayşe Erkmen and Ann Veronica Janssens are each creating a permanent sculpture for the Korenmarkt in Ghent, to be installed in early 2016. The S.M.A.K. considered this the perfect occasion to show a selection of sculptures and installations by the two artists and to examine how they dialogue with each other.
For both Janssens and Erkmen, sculpture goes beyond the relationship between image, viewer and space. They convert everyday phenomena into sculptural propositions that offer a new experience or an unexpected insight.

For both Ayşe Erkmen (1949, Istanbul, Turkey) and Ann Veronica Janssens (1956, Folkestone, UK), sculpture is a notion that amply transcends the three-dimensional nature of the artwork and the spatial relationship between the image and the viewer. On the basis of her interest in the historical and social context in which art is born, Erkmen makes invisible structures in our surroundings visible.
Janssens works on the elusive moment when body and light come together and employs light, colour and sound to examine the perception of space and movement. In spring 2016, these artists will each be making a permanent sculpture for the Korenmarkt, commissioned by Ghent City Council. The S.M.A.K. is taking this opportunity to set the designs in a broader context.

This double exhibition will be part of Europalia Turkey 2015-16.
