"The World was Flat" presents contemporary art that investigates ideas of time and space, it engages with the topic of changing worldviews. Nisrine Boukhari is inspired by the theories about how geographical environments affect people's emotions and behaviour. Using simple reflective materials Julio Le Parc creates large spectacular and playful light installations.
The World was Flat
[2015-11-05] The world was flat, now it's round and it will be a hologram. The exhibition The World was Flat presents contemporary art that investigates ideas of time and space. It is about the power of astrology or the shaman as a mediator between the rational and the supernatural, but also about the human desire for order and logical explanations of all phenomena.
On Sunday, November 22 at 14:00 Bildmuseet opens the house to three new exhibitions. One of them is titled The World was Flat - an exhibition of contemporary art that engages with the topic of changing worldviews.
Welcome to the press preview on Thursday, November 19 at 10:00 am. The artists / curators François Bucher and Lina Maria López will be present at the press preview as well as the opening of the exhibition. Artists Manuela Ribadeneira and John Mario Ortiz will also be present for the opening on Sunday.
The title of the exhibition traces a journey over time. It’s a story that gives the appearance of being linear but whose chronology is an illusion. It refers to changing worldviews and to constant renegotiations over our relationship to the body and to the universe. The exhibition comments upon mankind's relationship to time and space and to a multi-dimensional universe where the distinction between the shaman's world and a contemporary cyber-sphere is no longer so obvious.
The World was Flat includes works by Julieta Aranda, Erick Beltrán, François Bucher, Rometti Costales, Harun Farocki, Jeppe Hein, Herman von Helmholtz, Klara Hobza, Bernd Kröplin, Lina Maria López, Douwe Mulder, John Mario Ortiz, Julien Prévieux, Benoit Pype, Manuela Ribadeneira, Tomás Saraceno and Daniel Steegmann Mangrané. In addition to the artworks, objects have been borrowed from the Berlin Medical Historical Museum of the Charité University Hospital.
The exhibition was produced by Bildmuseet and curated by François Bucher and Lina Maria López. It is supplemented by a series of conversations about changing worldviews in which researchers from Umeå University participate.
The World was Flat and its programming is part of the university's 50th anniversary. The exhibition is on display at Bildmuseet until 27 March 2016.

[2015-11-05] Wanderism is a State of Mind by Syrian born artist Nisrine Boukhari is one of the three exhibition that opens at Bildmuseet on Sunday 22 November. Behind the ambiguous title of the exhibition lies the fact that the artist left her homeland, is constantly on the move and sees her own mind as her nation.

Nisrine Boukhari’s art is inspired by psychogeography: theories about how geographical environments affect people’s emotions and behaviour. In recent years she has been working with ideas of how a wandering mind is causing physical and intellectual movement and coined the term ‘Wanderism’. Behind the ambiguous title of the exhibition lies the fact that the artist left her homeland, is constantly on the move and sees her own mind as her nation.
At Bildmuseet she is exhibiting her manifesto about ‘Wanderism’. The visitor is invited to navigate among sheets of paper and to explore her scattered statements written by hand. Each reader interprets the words according to his or her own logic. This activity represents the endless possibilities of the mindwandering state.
Wanderism is a State of Mind is Nisrine Boukhari’s first solo exhibition in Scandinavia. It is on display at Bildmuseet until March 27, 2016.
Nisrine Boukhari (b. 1980) is originally from Syria, where she studied sculpture at the University of Damascus. She is currently doing post-graduate research at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria and holds a IASPIS scholarship in Stockholm during the autumn 2015.

Julio Le Parc / Lumière
[2015-11-05] In dialogue with contemporary immersive digital art, Julio Le Parc's ground breaking work has found new currency and his kinetic works are shown in exhibitions around the world. The exhibition that opens at Bildmuseet on Sunday 22 November – Le Parc's first solo exhibition in Scandinavia – focuses on one of the most important aspects of his work: his fascination with changing light.
On Sunday 22 November at 14:00 Bildmuseet opens the house to three new exhibitions. One of them is Julio Le Parc's exhibition titled Lumiére. The artists’ large scale light installations fill two full floors.
Welcome to the press preview on Thursday, November 19 at 10:00. Several of the artists involved in the new exhibitions will be present. Julio Le Parc will attend the opening on Sunday.
Julio Le Parc experiments with the spectator's experience of art and its enviroment. Using simple reflective materials he creates large spectacular and playful light installations. Light is set in motion using lenses and built-in motors. The works in the exhibition are mainly from the 1960s.
Julio Le Parc (f. 1928) is originally from Argentina but has been working in France since the 1960s. He was one of the founding members of the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV), a group of artists who delved into ideas about intraction and staged engaging events on the streets and in the city squares of Paris in the 1960s. This is the artist's first solo exhibition in Scandinavia.
The exhibition was produced by Bildmuseet and curated by Cecilia Andersson, Hans-Michael Herzog and Käthe Walser. It’s on view until 17 april 2016. Thanks to Daros Latinamerica Collection, Zürich and artEDU Stiftung.
