Jeremy Fay’s paintings are representations of his most immediate family surroundings. The majority of his portraits incorporate introspective discussions depicted in cartoon-like speech bubbles. The characters are identified by name labels that sit on every persons forehead. These portraits appear hastily executed and the figures barely emerge from their surroundings while their environments are solid and composed in main blocks of colour. His paintings are made in a large-scale gestural style but manage to incorporate a humorous and insightful narrative depicting his own family and friends as representatives of our common British culture and lifestyle.
Jeremy Fay’s work, though maybe not without some irony, represents loveable and intimate memories and depictions of his own everyday life. The works are nevertheless imaginary constructions where real existing people who are given a role become partnered with someone they may have never met before. The conversations and locations exist only in the artist’s imagination and are created for the viewer of his works only.
For his solo exhibition at VTO Jeremy Fay has also created a mobile hanging from the gallery ceiling depicting a series of painted as well as cut out portraits collected and enlarged from fashion magazines.
Jeremy Fay is an artist who lives and works in Newcastle.
VTO will also present Jeremy Fay in a solo statement at the LISTE 04 in Basel this year.
