In Digoin/Woods, a new commission for Angel Row Gallery, Chaimowicz proposes a hybrid of French and English vernacular tableware. By superimposing the rustic onto the industrial the familiar becomes strangely exotic, and vice versa. The very Englishness of 'Berylware', for decades the standard staple of village halls and tea rooms across the country is thus held hostage in a visual double-take. Alongside this installation are a series of photographs from a body of work now in the collection of the South London Gallery. Pendulum Polaroids capture incidental details seen on the streets of Paris and London.
Marc Camille Chaimowicz presents new and recent work in three projects for Angel Row Gallery, each of which reflects his experience of life in France and England. Born in Paris, Chaimowicz grew up in England following his family's move in the 1950s. He now divides his time between London and France and the pull from one culture to another continues to enrich his work.

Finally, Jean Cocteau, first seen at Norwich Gallery in autumn 2003, is a fictional construction of a room setting for the French poet, artist and film-maker, the fortieth anniversary of whose death was last year. Chaimowicz becomes curator by drawing together furniture, objets d'art and furnishings – a Marcel Breuer chair, some Giacometti lamps, paintings by Stephen Buckley and Nadia Wallis, a Warhol screenprint – and has woven these together with a carpet, mural and other furniture designed by himself. Chaimowicz has described the installation as 'a kind of portrait' and 'a fictional interior that is both a proposal for habitation and a mindscape' (Art Forum, February 2004). He has created an evocative and richly textured space that is a glimpse into a private and imagined world.
For Chaimowicz, the blurring of public and private is a recurring theme. He creates spaces and objects that both control and allow access into a private realm. (Pablo Lafuente, Art Review, November 2003)
