Luisa Caldwell: Arabesque will feature works on paper and wood panels made with tiny fruit sticker labels and their equivalent in glass seed beads. The association between these materials becomes clear as one interprets the loopy strands that Caldwell creates. Project Space: Christa Maiwald: Banners ('Past Tense,' 'Present Tense,' and 'Future Tense,'). Three large embroideries, part of an ongoing project dealing with the representation of teenagers. In these works the transitory snapshot images are recreated by painstaking hand embroidery.
Luisa Caldwell: Arabesque
Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present our second solo exhibition with
New York-based artist Luisa Caldwell.
Arabesque will feature works on paper and wood panels made with tiny fruit
sticker labels and their equivalent in glass seed beads. The association
between these materials becomes clear as one interprets the loopy strands
that Caldwell creates. The stickers are put end to end in elegant
configurations that evoke necklace strands. In other work, the fruit
stickers evolve into richly shaped flower and vine patterns. Caldwell also
mosaics glass seed beads into stunningly intricate images of roses and a
"Perfect Pumpkin". The materials and images are simultaneously paralleled
and intertwined to make for a continuous dialogue: fruit stickers become
beads, glass beads make flowers and fruit images. She sites her influences
to a diverse range of art from Fred Tomaselli to Persian patterning of the
Mogul Empire. Caldwell has been engaged with this body of work during the
years she was exhibiting her sculptural installations. Caldwell considers
the beads she works from a collection, acquired from traveling to countries
such as Italy and India. Additional effort goes into collecting the fruit
stickers. Caldwell dutifully raids the produce aisle in local grocery
stores. The experience of collecting becomes integral to the process of
making the work. These small pieces of commercial debris reflect
contemporary culture. The materials add layers of interpretation to what may
appear on the surface to be all rhythm and pattern making.
The exhibition is on view from June 3
through July 10, 2004. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on
Thursday, June 3, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
