Paul Moss

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead

Push Me Pull Me features a new body of work created during a three-month residency at Durham Cathedral. Moss uses a variety of media and works with both obviously handmade materials and pieces fabricated and finished by specialist manufacturers. Moss is interested in communication, particularly meanings hidden within everyday objects that are often taken for granted. For example, in earlier work Moss explores the concealed language of red and white hazard tape, and its ability to signal both warning and institutionalised incompetence.

Push Me Pull Me

BALTIC is proud to present an exhibition by Newcastle-based artist Paul Moss; Push Me Pull Me features a new body of work created during a three-month residency at Durham Cathedral.

The apparatus of communication in the church does not avoid Moss's playful scrutiny, with a design for a pulpit in Formica laminate, the footprint base of a cathedral pillar re-worked as a dance floor, and the language of a stained glass window reflected in a new work which resembles both a mind game and disco glitter ball.

Since graduating with a degree in fine art from the University of Newcastle in 1998, Paul Moss has developed and presented his work throughout the north east in a wide variety of exhibitions, temporary commissions and residencies.

Past activity includes a year-long Arts Council funded residency with Newcastle based architects I.D. Partnerships during which Moss explored relationships between architectural processes and his own practice. He was involved in 'The Baltic Quays' redevelopment project in Gateshead where he contributed to the public art strategy, and 'Staiths South Bank', the ambitious new low cost/high design housing development instigated by Wayne Hemmingway. Moss works from his studio at Waygood Gallery in Newcastle and is currently developing projects in the UK and internationally.

Paul Moss works across a range of media including drawing, painting, installation, sculpture, performance, multimedia and cross art form collaborations. Moss is an artist and curator whose previous exhibitions include 'Remain in Light', Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland where he installed a 36 foot 'Danger Painting' made using red and white hazard tape, 'Playing Fields' at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle and a 'Year of the Artist' residency at Live Theatre, Newcastle.

Moss is Co-Director of 'Workplace' a new north east based artist-led organisation, due to open an art gallery in Gateshead Town Centre later this year. 'Workplace' are currently producing a publication showcasing the work of 12 of the regions most prominent practising artists. Past 'Workplace' projects include presence at London Art Fair ART2003 and Vacant an exhibition at Reg Vardy Gallery in Sunderland.
