...to achieve the goal that all vanguards have pursued throughout the twentieth century: to eliminate the divisions between art and life...

Ramis Barquet is pleased to announce Contemporary Tapestries, an exhibition of tapestries masterfully woven by the Taller Mexicano de Gobelinos (Mexican Tapestry Workshop), a workspace based in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico where the art of tapestry has been practiced for over thirty years under the direction of Fritz Riedl.
The tapestries that comprise this exhibition are mostly large format recreations of original artworks by contemporary Latin American artists such as Marco Arce, José Bedia, Fernanda Brunet, Jorge Pardo and Ray Smith.
The Taller Mexicano de Gobelinos has been brought together with these artists by Jaime Ashida, who has worked with some of the most influential contemporary artists. Ashida is also the director of ARENA MEXICO, the Guadalajara-based gallery that showcases provocative art from the young generation of artists in this city. By joining these two entities, it is Ashida’s goal to revitalize a traditional Mexican craft such as weaving, by combining it with the energy of the contemporary art scene. Through this act of revitalization, the fine line between the realms of the so-called “high arts†and “low arts†becomes almost imperceptible.
About the artists:
Marco Arce was born in Mexico City in 1968. At present he lives and works in Mexico City. José Bedia was born in Havana in 1959 and lives and works in Miami. Fernanda Brunet was born in 1963 in Mexico City, where she currently lives and works. Jorge Pardo was born in Havana, Cuba in 1963. He lives and works in Los Angeles. Ray Smith was born in Texas in 1959. He divides his time between New York City and Cuernavaca, Mexico.
