Art, Image and Identity, 1900-2000.

This landmark exhibition addresses the relationship between the arts and California’s evolving image over the past century. Through an unprecedented collaboration of nine programmatic departments, the exhibition explores how the arts have contributed to the creation and dissemination of differing images of California, taking into consideration both "booster" images of the state and other coexisting and at times competing images.

Scheduled to open sequentially in October 2000, Made in California: Art, Image, and Identity, 1900-2000 features approximately 550 works of art in a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, graphic art, decorative art, fashion, film, and music. Also included are approximately 350 cultural documents, such as travel brochures, posters, postcards, magazine and newspaper articles, and documentary photography, which convey California’s evolving popular image. Music, video, and computer stations in the galleries further enrich this examination of the fine arts and popular conceptions of the state.

The exhibition is presented thematically in five chronological sections spanning approximately 20 years each, and will occupy over 35,000 square feet of gallery space within the museum. In conjunction with the exhibition, LACMA is mounting a kaleidoscope of related activities and events, including ongoing film and music programs, live performances, readings, family days, and lecture series. The exhibition is unprecedented in its collaborative scope; more than 30 cultural institutions throughout Los Angeles are presenting exhibitions, performances, and programs in conjunction with Made in California: Art, Image, and Identity, 1900-2000.
