Chris Hellman, New Works on Paper

Landscape, A View Near and Far

During the month of June, Rena Bransten Gallery (77 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA 94108) will present an exhibition of new watercolors by Chris Hellman and a group exhibition of artists exploring the concept of Landscape.

Chris Hellman's new works on paper continue to document her careful exploration and examination of natural forms. Challenged by the exact and perfect organization of flower, bud, pod, leaf, and shell, Hellman looks for and exposes their ambiguous and abstract potential as well as their symmetry. Seed pods appear to be conversing; a pair of calyxes dancing; strands of seaweed shoot comet-like across the white paper ground, and mussels drawn broadside look whale-like as they fill the page. Hellman's ability to create a dynamic within the pictures' content and to vivify what she first presents as mere specimens, gives her paintings a spin that is both clever and shrewd.

The Landscape exhibit will consist of works in all media by artists observing or pushing the boundaries of traditional landscape art. Artists included are Yoshi Abe, Uta Barth, Rebeca Bollinger, James Buss, Jim Christiansen, Marsha Cottrell, Tony de los Reyes, Doug Hall, Anders Krisar, Eirik Johnson, Ian McDonald, Vik Muniz, Robyn O'Neil, Paul Seawright, and Henry Wessel. The content of the selected artworks covers desert vistas, the strained vegetation of neighborhood greenery, the idea of "forest" both real and psychological, the juicy nature of still life arrangements, human activities in the great out-of-doors, evidence of man's impact on the landscape, as well as his attempts to document feelings of awe evoked by it.
