Many artists' practices today have inflections of painting's recent history embedded within their visual logic. Taking different strands of painting's diverse history, the artists in '...but not as we know it' show how painting can inform and impact upon various concerns within contemporary visual practices.
Kontainer Gallery is proud to present "...but not as we know it", a group

Many artists' practices today have inflections of painting's recent
history embedded within their visual logic. Taking different strands of
painting's diverse history, the artists in '...but not as we know it' show
how painting can inform and impact upon various concerns within
contemporary visual practices.
'...but not as we know it' combines emerging and established artists,
predominantly British, working within the expanded field of contemporary
painting. Maintaining a dialogue with canvas and paint, it explores an
evolution towards installation and object-based work. A strong theme of
slippage between image and object runs through the show, an instability
evident in the combination of grandiose theatricality with the mundane,
and subversion through irreverent, humorous methods of process and
self-referentiality.
The theatricality of painting stages a catastrophe. Traditional practices
undergo violent restructuring. Familiar styles are torn apart and
re-emerge mannered, ridiculed, trivialised and debased as pure fodder for
consumption. At the same time, painting celebrates a new brashness,
revels in taking centre stage and drawing the viewer into complicity as it
struts in its new array - the stuff of the everyday, both the cast-off and
new fabrications of consumerism and banality.
Each artist's concerns are interwoven within the group dynamic. Fetishism
and obsessiveness work alongside dark humour and childlike playfulness.
Overtly form-conscious, the exhibition aims to show a slice of current
enquiries, investigating multi-layered and shared narratives.
