Adam and Eve

One hundred major works by one of the greatest engravers of all time, in Paris from July 8

The Town Hall of the 5th Arrondissement of Paris and the Italian Arts Centre will be exhibiting a remarkable collection of Albrecht Dürer engravings from private collections from July 8 until October 3 2004. Xylography, chisel work, dry-point, over a hundred major works illustrating every technique and facet of his art. An exceptional opportunity to rediscover one of engraving's great masters.

A man of culture
Albrecht Dürer – born Nuremberg, 21 May 1471, died there 6 April 1528 – was a man of extraordinary culture and learning, capable of both assimilating and interpreting with a sharp critical eye the upheavals of his time. The evolution of his engraving technique and his formal choices are based on a profound analysis of the documents and their contents. For his religious subjects he refers at once to Antiquity and the New Testament. When he turns to religious devotion he checks every detail in the Holy Scriptures. He researches the text while placing it within its cultural context. He goes beyond the event and gives it its full meaning.

A unique figurative vocabulary
Like every great Renaissance artist, Dürer creates his own figurative vocabulary. In his eyes, the slightest detail is important. This exhibition illustrates once again the outstanding variety of human types, often set against a background of grandiose architecture and wide open landscapes. And his is an art which illuminates the scriptures. His illustrations of biblical stories such as Joachim's annunciation or The marriage of Mary and Joseph are as powerful as any scholarly exegesis. The three great cycles of The Virgin's life, The Small Xylographic Passion, The Small Engraved Passion and the thirty odd woodcuts which accompany them, all created during his most mature period, offer an opportunity to rediscover the many facets of an immense talent.
