Remote Control and Jenny West

Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham

Remote Control looks at authorship in relation to contemporary drawing, by exploring the idea of the 'hand of the artist' and what happens when an instrument or device intervenes between hand and paper. Artist Jenny West will create a site specific installation in the foyer area of the gallery which will explore the relationship of drawing to architectural space.

Remote Control looks at authorship in relation to contemporary drawing, by exploring the idea of the 'hand of the artist' and what happens when an instrument or device intervenes between hand and paper.

Bálint Bolÿgó and Robert Currie each create 'machines' that make drawings to their command, yet the results are anything but pre-determined. Roy Brown's use of the much-loved (and yet frustrating) children's toy Etch-a-Sketch and Lesley Halliwell's intricate and intensely-worked drawings with Spirograph kits also demonstrate that, in spite of the mechanics of process, there is still room for the unexpected and random mark.

Gillian Dyson and Sarah Doyle present video pieces that reveal the process of making drawings and hint at the possibilities for the act of drawing to be performance, using tools as diverse as eyelashes and record decks. Katie Holton takes this idea of drawing as event or part of daily life one step further with wall-based drawings in wool: a continuous 'stream of consciousness' crocheted as she travelled around New York by subway.

Simon Faithfull and Marek Tobolewski both question the freedom of the hand-drawn line. At first glance Tobolewski's drawings appear organic, flowing and independent but are in fact mechanically made with a compass, creating a series of continuous connecting arcs. Using a palm pilot, Faithfull 'draws' across the computer screen with his finger, producing surprisingly 'low tech' images in contrast to the complex digital technology he uses. For this exhibition, the drawing is translated from palm pilot to huge wall-drawing by gallery staff, working to a 'code' created by Faithfull but handed over in the ultimate act of remote control.

Jenny West

Saturday 10 July - Saturday 4 September 2004

Continuing the Window 04 season, artist Jenny West will create a site specific installation in the foyer area of the gallery which will explore the relationship of drawing to architectural space. Two dimensional drawings of mathematical precision extend out into the space through a series of taut coloured threads. As light changes within the space the drawings reveal hidden details of the interior architecture, creating a visual experience from the moment you enter the gallery.

Window 04 is an annual series of exhibitions which will take place in the foyer of Angel Row Gallery. In 2004 each show will look at the themes of transit and space: what might happen in those areas through which we often pass but rarely stop?
