Under one roof
ARTISTS: DAVID AND TRACY CARTER, NHLANHLA MBATHA, JACKI MCINNES, ZONIA NEL-SCHEFFER

OPENING: SUNDAY 11 JULY 17:00
PREVIEW: Saturday 10 JULY 10:OO - 14:00

ZONIA NEL-SCHEFFER from Stellenbosch, previously from Pretoria, refers to her exhibition as "Options" which portrays the seriousness of jobs and job creation in South Africa. The work also depicts the devastating effects of modern-day phenomena such as downsizing and retrenchments. The corporate ladder, white collar fraud, the computer, arrows, etc are all symbolic of the business environment. Apart from the rules and regulations within the corporate environment there are many options in life which man can use to ultimately decide his own fate. The works therefore, although comical, depict very serious modern day issues.

______

DAVID AND TRACY CARTER's wood totems is a joint venture by husband and wife team, who now reside in the little town of Arniston in the Cape Province. They utilise invader species of trees, such as eucalyptus, poplar, pine and cedar, thereby helping with their eradication, and produce exciting wooden pots and other forms of art. Their love for the African environment has been their influence behind their sculptural creations of seedpods which will feature on this exhibition.

______

JACKI MCINNES resides in Cape Town and she had her first solo exhibition at the AVA in Cape Town in 2002. Her works mainly consist of melted lead and coarse salt and she depicts scenes of memories, in the form of toddler dresses, etc. The works are mainly boxed due to the texturised work that forms a three-dimensional effect.

Artist's Statement: "The works on show form part of a body of work entitled "For Her" produced during 2002 and 2003 for a Masters Degree in Fine Art (UCT). The work deals with questions relating to abortion and explores the psychological impact that a woman may experience when a choice that ought to exist in the realm of the personal becomes politicised."

______

NHLANHLA MBATHA, a Johannesburg based artist, works mainly in mixed media on paper. Mbatha's new works, however, incorporate photographic vinyl thus fusing painting and photography. His aim is to produce work which questions and challenges society's values while at the same time using history as a platform to research and develop material.
