John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and prints by Robert Rauschenberg. This exhibition opens July 15th, 2004, and will run through August 28th, 2004.

Robert Rauschenberg is one of the leading artists of his generation. His experimental work with assemblage and non-artistic material, in addition to his drive to connect art with modern life, helped lead contemporary art from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art. This exhibition features paintings, screenprints and lithographs from a broad range of his works from the late 1980’s to the present including several from the LA Uncovered series.

Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur, Texas on October 22, 1925. After briefly attending the University of Texas to study pharmacology and serving in the US Navy during World War II, he decided to study art. He attended Kansas City Art Institute (1947-1948), and the Academie Julian, Paris (1947). Rauschenberg's first one-man show was at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1951. In 1962, Rauschenberg made his first lithograph at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in West Islip, New York at the insistence of the late Tatyana Grosman. At the same time he incorporated the silk-screen process in his paintings. His work is included in virtually every important international collection of contemporary art.
