been experienced during four "Exploration Weekends."
SAN DIEGO/TIJUANA - The fourth edition of inSITE,
a contemporary arts project organized jointly by
institutions in the United States and Mexico, will open
Oct. 13, 2000, and run through Feb. 25, 2001, at
various sites in San Diego and Tijuana. Approximately
30 new works by 34 artists from throughout the
Americas will debut at various times during 19 weeks
of public programming. Projects will range from new
media and installation to performance and spectacle,
film and video.
"The heart of inSITE is the process of realizing new
projects by artists from throughout the Americas in
the course of sustained residencies in the binational
region," said Michael Krichman, inSITE2000
executive director/US. "Many of the artists have
enlisted the active participation of the public in the
development of their projects," he said. As in other
versions of inSITE, projects will be dispersed
throughout the region in unexpected venues in San
Diego and Tijuana, the most heavily trafficked border
region in the world. Most works will be accessible free
of charge.
In contrast to other versions of inSITE, which
concentrated almost exclusively on installation and
site-specific art, inSITE2000 will present a
significant number of projects that are based on
events, video and spectacle.
To enable the public to fully experience inSITE2000,
the organizers have arranged four weekends of
focused activity, called "Exploration Weekends." Each
weekend will be punctuated by organized expeditions
to selected project sites, the presentation of events
and performances, and various public programs.
Exploration Weekends, which commence with Friday
events, are scheduled for Oct.13-15, Nov. 17-19,
Jan. 19-21 and Feb. 23-25. During the Exploration
Weekends, the public has the choice of joining an
organized expedition for a fee or arranging their own
transportation.
In addition to the Exploration Weekends, inSITE2000
will be accompanied by a barrage of special events,
including symposia, lectures, performances and a film
and video series. As details are confirmed, information
on the exhibition and special events will be available
online at www.insite2000.org. A free schedule of
events, slated for publication in September, will be
available by calling the inSITE office at (619)
544-1482. inSITE2000 is organized through a
collaboration of more than 25 nonprofit and public
cultural arts institutions in Mexico and the United
States. It is coordinated by the nonprofit Installation
Gallery of San Diego and the Instituto Nacional de
Bellas Artes (CONACULTA-INBA), Mexico's
foremost fine arts institution.
Artists were selected by inSITE2000's multi-national
curatorial team, consisting of Ivo Mesquita, a
Brazilian curator who worked on inSITE97 and is
director of the next Sao Paulo Bienal; Susan
Buck-Morss, a professor in the government
department at Cornell University and writer
specializing in political philosophy and urbanism;
Osvaldo Sanchez, director of the Carrillo Gil Museum
in Mexico City, and Sally Yard, a writer and professor
of art history at the University of San Diego, who has
held key positions in each version of inSITE. The
following artists are scheduled to return to the region
to research, plan and execute their projects during two
additional residencies.
