Contemporary Art Exhibition. Theme: Chasm-N-E-T.

comunicato stampa

Theme: Chasm-N-E-T

Exhibition
With the theme Chasm- N-E-T, co-curators Tae-Man Choi and Manu D. Park collaborate with 92 artists from 37 countries to compose a dynamic exhibition in three parts. Interpreting chasm as a sort of post-traumatic mental/social/spiritual gap or dis-connect, the exhibition contemplates the post-colonial condition as well as that of contemporary culture and society. The sub-concept N-E-T is employed to allow multiple interpretations of the exhibit concept with three inter-related sub-sections: Point of Contact, Hang in There My Dear Guem-sun and Moving Picture Desire.

Point of Contact, co-curated by Tae-Man Choi and Manu D. Park, brings together works that help to extenuate an idea of the Biennale as a point where nomadically flowing people and ideas of diverse cultural discourse intersect, exchange and continue a fluid motion. In so doing we seek to raise various questions about globalization, capitalism, and the post-colonial condition.

Hang in There My Dear Geum-sun, curated by Tae-Man Choi is inspired by a popular song from the Korean War period which speaks about the suffering of women and families in war. Through this section he tries to interweave feminist discourses with the senses of trauma which are brought on by war, colonialism, and rapid industrialization.

Moving Picture Desire, curated by Manu D. Park looks at the role of cinematic perception in the construction of desire towards the other, presenting works that deal with various types of differences, gaps and clashes while offering alternative modes of film/video presentation.

International Curator workshop & Panel Discussion
(Think Tank Workshop: Aug 10 -19, 2004 , International Symposium: Aug 20-21, 2004)

Instead of the usual format of a symposium in the context of an international Biennial, with people that fly in and just give a talk, this Busan Biennale developed a platform for a symposium in progress. During the installing of the works by the artists, national and international curators and theorists, inspired by the creative atmosphere of the omnipresent artistic activities, reflect on issues related to current curatorial models and theories. Besides that, this niche will function as the critical consciousness of the curatorial perspective of the Busan Biennale 2004, as the invited speakers, but also a group of young international curators and some participating artists, continuously reflect on and discuss the premises of the exhibition from their own (Asian) experiences and perspective. During a concluding public symposium the results of this 10 days Think Tank workshop will be presented in broader perspectives.

Participants (tentative)
Ute Meta Bauer, Yuko Hasegawa, Vasif Kortun, Yukie Kamiya, Henk Slager, Hou Hanru, Manu D. Park, Tobias Berger, and others.
