'John in the desert'
Jeff Bailey Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo exhibition of Mike Peter Smith, John In The Desert.
In a series of sculptural works depicting unruly desert terrain, John, a failed geologist, encounters an unsympathetic landscape. His attempts to stake a claim, or leave any sort of lasting mark on the desert, are continually thwarted.
Employing the visual language of natural history dioramas and glimpses of behind the scenes construction, these sculptures suggest the enduring landscape and man’s desire to alter it.
Mike Peter Smith received his MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from The University of Utah. His sculptures have been exhibited in recent exhibitions at AIM 24, The Bronx Museum of Arts; Terrorvision, Exit Art; Plane and Elevation, Art In General; Some Exhaust, Lehmann Maupin Gallery; and Bodybuilder and Sportsman Gallery, Chicago.
