Design for a Carnival. Adam Chodzko's work is an art of arrangements; inventing new relationships between our value and belief systems. Working directly with the people and places that surround him to produce a collective wondering, Chodzko focuses on culture's edges, endings and disappearances.

Adam Chodzko's work is an art of arrangements; inventing new relationships between our value and belief systems. Working directly with the people and places that surround him to produce a collective wondering, Chodzko focuses on culture's edges, endings and disappearances. He has created assemblies of owners of a particular jacket and a reunion of the children 'murdered' in a Pasolini film; a god look-alike contest; lighting technicians asked to advise on the light in heaven; a London gallery's archive given to a group of Kurdish asylum seekers to edit and hide outside the capital; and most recently, the multi-faceted 'Design for a Carnival,' the evolution of a ritual event for the future.
At the gallery, the artist will be showing part of an elaborate, fragmented project, Design for a Carnival, which is made up of independent but networked events and proposals. As the artist states:
"....it exists simply as a series of images and situations that together suggest the outline of an event; a carnival (the medieval anarchic kind, not a baton twirling commercial 'parade'). It is proposal for a way in which a community can engage with itself for a moment; full of play and disorder, free from commerce, words, reason, and fixed hierarchies or identities. But this 'community' is fragmented, its 'carnival' migrating across a number of spaces and times. More tangibly it is a series of images, drawings, videos, objects and events which put together lace makers with wind turbines, the opening moments of house music in the mid '80's with a street corner in Moscow, Italian anarchists and Kent poor white trash teenagers making fires of baseball hats and maps....."
Is what we see the preparatory work for a carnival's future existence? Or does the carnival actually take place in the gallery itself, as a relationship between art and its viewer; a carnival of preparation, open-endedness, allusions and wonder? It is this ambiguous space that Chodzko's work always occupies.

Forthcoming is a major project, commissioned by Frieze, for Frieze Art Fair, 14-19 October
