On Friday the 10th of September Beukers Gallery opens her new season with a very special solo-exhibition of the Italian painter / photographer / video-artist / and more; Antonio Manfredi.
'Painting in a photograph' shows a series of installations in which the artist contrasts an abstract painting with a series of different environments. By using the concept of a photographic sequence, the spectator may expect the narrative continuity of a film; instead, the artist provokes the viewer with seemingly unrelated material and creates a myriad of possible stories for the viewer to contemplate on. For these 'mischievous' monochrome paintings travel to where they are least expected, demonstrating in very clear terms the alienation of modern art, and, in the same way, they mirror our own alienation. However, through the monochrome colours that reappear in his work, the artist creates a bond between the alienated work of art and the places that it visits, and creates an impossible and yet possible intriguing harmony.
It is said that it is through an underlying social awareness that the artist has this unrelenting urge to mediate between two opposites. This also includes theoretical aspects of Manfredi's work. 'Painting in a photograph' attempts to fill the gap between abstract and figurative art, between painting and photography, between modern and post-modern art, between dissonance and harmony and so on...
Manfredi also presents his latest series 'me, myself and I'. In these photographs the artist looks at himself, his art and his life, and gives in an to ironic, open-hearted, sometimes humorous, sometimes painful self-reflection.
