Bikini Carwash will consist of photographic and videographic self-portraits of the bikini-clad artist, Liz Cohen, as seen during her 2002 performance - also called, 'Bikini Carwash' - on a street in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Modern Culture will present "Bikini Carwash,"a solo exhibition of photo and video works by Liz Cohen.
"Liz Cohen: Bikini Carwash" will consist of photographic and videographic self-portraits of the bikini-clad artist, Liz Cohen, as seen during her 2002 performance--also called, "Bikini Carwash"--on a street in the Mission District of San Francisco.
The body--of both the human female and the automobile--is the focus of much of Liz Cohen's recent work.
In the single-channel video work, "Bikini Carwash," Liz Cohen is seen wearing a pink, patterned bikini and a pair of acrylic platform shoes, washing cars and motorcycles, driven by everyday motorists, at a curbside location in San Francisco's Mission District. Above the doorway of the storefront alternative art space, Spanganga, a large sign, "BIKINI CARWASH," announces the event, which is supported, as well, by a hot dog vending cart, operated by a friend of the artist.
The bikini-clad Liz Cohen is portrayed with a different automobile in each of the 30 x 40-inch, color, c-print photographs featured in "Liz Cohen: Bikini Carwash." A group portrait of the artist, four San Francisco firefighters, and the firehouse's mascot Dalmatian, posing in front of a firetruck that had arrived at the site of the perfomance, "Bikini Carwash," will also be available as a multiple, published by Modern Culture.
Liz Cohen, who lives and works in Phoenix, earned her MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco, and her BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her work has been exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Stuttgart, and Berlin. "Liz Cohen: Bikini Carwash" will be the artist's debut solo exhibition in New York.
"Liz Cohen: Bikini Carwash" will open on the 14th of September 2004 and will remain on view through the 15th of October 2004.
Modern Culture is located at 730 Fifth Avenue, 9th Floor, (between 56th & 57th Streets) in the 57th Street District of Midtown Manhattan.
