Fashination

Moderna Museet, Stockholm

Moderna Museet's exhibition Fashination will highlight the long-standing mutual fascination between the worlds of art and fashion. These two worlds have intermingled many times in the past, to indulge their shared interest in the visual, tactile and experimental. A great deal has happened since the 1990s. Over the past ten years, the interchange has grown more frequent and the boundaries more hazy. Each discipline borrows from the other's strategies for promoting exposure and experimenting with materials, as well as issues concerning survival and the vulnerability of the body.

Today, many artists are intrigued by the capacity of fashion to communicate visually directly with a broader public. Fashion, in turn, has advanced its positions and now embraces a form of avant-garde that often has a conceptual approach that focuses on ideas and processes, rather than on autumn and spring collections.

This makes Fashination an urgent exhibition that introduces the audience to an array of international names: artists, fashion designers and fashion photographers who are brought together temporarily at Moderna Museet, and who all share a fascination for fashion in different ways. The exhibition will consist of new works, selected items from collections, fashion photography and objects. Yinka Shonibare will collaborate with Swedish television in the production of his first film.

* Yinka Shonibare makes his first film

Over the past ten years, London-based Yinka Shonibare has become famous for his art that wittily combines narratives, analyses of power structures and dress-making. In connection with the Moderna Museet exhibition Fashination (25 September - 23 January 2005), he will be presenting his first film. The theme of the film is the assassination of the Swedish king Gustav III (1746-1792).

The film will be produced jointly by the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Swedish Television, which will provide the production technology. The story will be performed in the form of a dance act, choreographed by Lisa Torun. Thirty dancers, chosen after extensive auditioning, will tell the story of what happened on 16 March, 1792, when the king was shot the King at a masked ball at the Opera.

The film will be shot at a Rococo theatre (Confidencen) in Stockholm that was commissioned by Gustav III's mother, Lovisa Ulrika (1720-1780), the Swedish regent who has perhaps done the most for Sweden in terms of investments in culture and science. Gustav III shared his mother's and father's fervent interest in French culture and the latest fashion. He was also deeply engaged in politics and consequently made many enemies. His assassin, the nobleman Jacob Johan Anckarström was one of them. At the fateful Masked Ball, he was shot and severely hurt. Ten days later he was dead. Verdi's opera with the same name is also based on this episode in Swedish history.

"I was fascinated by this king. His interest in clothes and French culture - and his sexual ambiguity - which is hinted at in various portraits of him. The power games, the frustrations and the drama were, of course, other ingredients that were captivating," says Yinka Shonibare.

The costumes will be in the Rococo style, but made in the pseudo-African cotton batik material, bought at Brixton Market in London, that has become something of an emblem for Yinka Shonibare.

The first screening of the film will take place at the Moderna Museet in connection with the exhibition Fashination and will also be broadcast on Swedish Television. The making of the film will also be presented in a documentary made for Swedish Television.

Yinka Shonibare recently completed a work for the Moderna Museet foyer. This work also has a historical theme: a replica of the battleship Vasa, which sank on its virgin voyage in 1628.
