PICA takes it to the street

The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts becomes streetwise for a season of contemporary art developed from the streets of Perth to New York.

PICA's guest curator, Stormie Mills, features graffiti artists from around the world, whose art has evolved from direct engagement with the street, in his exhibition project, Application.

Highly regarded artist/designers Retna started his career with Los Angeles crew AWR/MSK, and his work now includes store displays and music videos, as well as exhibiting around the world.

On the other side of the US, Marwan Makki paints the streets of New York under his alias. For Application his work will combines his political attitudes with a nod to fellow NYC artist Andy Warhol. Also from New York, Jersey Joe started 'writing' the city as a twelve year-old and adapts the surfaces and street signs he finds with the addition of twisted cartoon-like characters, which are guaranteed to get a reaction from passers-by.

After finishing high school in Greece, Bizare started painting systematically on walls. Having graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts and having worked as an illustrator for one of Greece's biggest newspapers, Bizare no longer identifies with the 'graffiti' tag, but like all the artists in Application, sees himself as an artist with a unique training within street culture and a promising future.
Application will be accompanied by the return to her hometown of Arlene TextaQueen for a major solo exhibition, Un-dressed-up, featuring her idiosyncratic contemporary parlour nudes, all drawn with felt-tip markers.

Initially conceived as drawings for a Manga-esque soft-porn website, her "textanudes" are influenced by the tradition of the salon nude in fluid contours and colours. TextaQueen depicts female friends (and occasionally men) in intimate spaces from bedrooms to baths in their chosen attire and environs, whether drinking champagne in the toilet or as two tangled nudes on a tandem bicycle.

Texta will be a frequent visitor to PICA during her exhibition, including opening night, where she will be drawing for the public and encouraging them to go all the way for a textanude.
Perth's up-and-coming graffiti talent will have a chance to share the stage as they 'battle it out' on canvas and board in the Perth Cultural Centre for grafBATTLE 04. The live graf demonstrations will be set to a hip hop soundtrack supplied by DJ Chronic and DJ Mega, with a finale performance by hip hop krew LifeKwest. "grafBATTLE" will also be accompanied by an exhibition featuring several of the artists taking part in the project.
And finally, taking a more cerebral approach to looking at the cities in which we live, a group of Perth artists have produced a multiple video projection and rich audio environment titled, Invisible Cities. Artists include Caspar Fairhall, Alexander Hayes, Paul Carstairs and musician and sound artist, Rob Muir.

The opening celebration for all four exhibition projects will be held on Wednesday October 6 at 6pm and exhibiting until November 14, from Tuesday to Sunday, at PICA in the Perth Cultural Centre. Admission to all exhibitions and the grafBATTLE event is free to the public.
