Pilot:1

Old Limehouse Townhall, London

A showcase for emerging visual artists & independent curators. The event provides an informal dynamic environment where participants and visitors can meet and exchange ideas as well as seeing the work of a diverse and important group of new artists. Each artist participating will submit work for exhibition, plus documentation of past projects and future proposals. Most importantly, they will be present for the duration of the event to make contact with curators, collectors, and critics as well as being available to a wider public.

PILOT:1 provides an informal dynamic environment where participants and visitors can meet and exchange ideas as well as seeing the work of a diverse and important group of new artists. PILOT is a free event.

Each artist participating will submit work for exhibition, plus documentation of past projects and future proposals. Most importantly, they will be present for the duration of the event to make contact with curators, collectors, and critics as well as being available to a wider public. PILOT will be hosted at the Old Limehouse Townhall on October 16, 17 and 18, to coincide with the Frieze Art Fair.

A publication and an online archive will be available. Continuous administration of the project will ensure that the artists are represented well after the event, and form a bridge to PILOT:2 in 2005. In this way PILOT can develop as a growing resource for artists, curators, collectors and writers.

Some fifty views from artists, curators and academics on the struggle of artists, the academicising of curating and the role of -fringe- art events.

ROUND TABLE Monday October 18, 4-5pm
Organised and chaired by Matthew Poole
Rather than ask participants to prepare a paper, I have asked them to prepare some thoughts about the questions raised by the existence of PILOT, as a way of interrogating the event as well as looking into issues of autonomy, economy and notions of democracy, with a view to looking at mechanisms of exposure for artists, and how these have a bearing on art practice and the professional practices of the art world.
