Le Grande Cafe

Galerie Frank Paris is very pleased to be presenting during October and November a solo exhibition by Australian artist James Lynch. Based in the small but sophisticated Melbourne art scene Lynch is highly regarded for intensely made installations, paintings, drawings and animations which draw out connections and relationships between reality and fantasy. Lynch has an extensive and eclectic exhibition history. He founded the ground breaking group DAMP, the publishing and curatorial project rubik, is a contributing editor to Natural Selection magazine and shows regularly at the infamous Uplands gallery. Along the way he has garnished reviews in Art and Text, Flash Art, and Frieze magazines.

Most recently Lynch has utilised a collection of dreams other people have had in which he appears as a basis for his art making. Often telling pointless stories that traverse inner worlds unto themselves Lynch’s work has been described as bewildering, highly amusing and deeply intimate. For Galerie Frank, Lynch will present Le Grande Café recalling Lumiere and his inaugural cinema. The exhibition comprises of a series of related paintings, animations and an installation that invites the audience into proximity with an extended narrative that illustrates a dream in which a close friend is running with a coffeepot, in search of a cup.

While numerous artists over the previous decade have examined social interconnectivity as an aesthetic underlying Lynch’s work is a genuine interest in exploring the complex fields of social relationships that bind us together. He is greatly informed by his experiences with working collaboratively in groups, as well as a keen interest in psychoanalysis and cinema. Within these dreams, narratives and unconscious networks Lynch appears and functions, far more than just a ‘shell’, but as a container and signifier for the anxieties, fears and desires of his most intimate friends and companions. He considers the work to be just one way of remembering how we are all active participants and play unspoken roles in the support of each other’s fantasy, imagination and wish fulfillment’s.

Lynch was recently included in the large survey exhibition 2004 - Visual Culture Now at the National Gallery of Victoria and has exhibited extensively throughout Asia, New Zealand and Australia. He trained at the Victorian College of the Arts Melbourne from 1994-96 where he has lectured since 2000. His work is held in private collections in Belgium, France, Melbourne, Mexico, Los Angeles, Sweden and Sydney. This exhibition has been assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
