214 World-Renowned Galleries from 24 Countries at Leading Modern and Contemporary Art Fair
31st Annual FIAC Celebrates Emerging Artists and Galleries
New Design Section; Corporate Advisory Service; Events and Lectures with Curators and Critics

Paris, October 1 - The international modern and contemporary art fair FIAC (Foire Internationale d'Art Contemporain) will take place October 21-25 in halls 4 and 5.1 of the Paris Expo at the Porte de Versailles. 2004 marks FIAC's 31st year, when the fair will welcome 214 rigorously selected galleries from 24 countries, with almost one third of the galleries participating in FIAC for the first time. General Manager Jean-Daniel Compain, FIAC's new international Steering Committee, new artistic director Jennifer Flay and the entire FIAC team have sought to make the 2004 fair a dynamic mix of tradition and discovery. The result is an unparalleled overview of modern and contemporary art in one of the world's leading cultural capitals.

FIAC 2004 will be divided into five sections:

- FIAC Central: 140 leading modern and contemporary galleries from around the world
- Perspectives: 33 cutting-edge galleries exhibiting works by emerging artists
- Future Quake: 20 galleries three years old or less.
- FIAC/Design section: 10 galleries showing works that bridge the gap between fine art and decor
- Multiples: 11 galleries specializing in fine art editions, lithographs, silkscreens, artists' books and videos

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
FIAC 2004 is marked by great geographic diversity: this year, almost half of the 214 participating galleries come from abroad, representing 23 countries in Eastern and Western Europe, North and South America and Asia. The U.S. contingent has nearly tripled in size from previous years, with 13 American galleries participating, (compared to five in 2003). FIAC will also welcome 8 English galleries, 5 German galleries, 14 Belgian galleries and 18 Italian galleries to the fair this year.

LEADER IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART (Hall 4)
FIAC has a unique identity among international art fairs: it has always been broad in scope, welcoming leading galleries in modern and postwar contemporary art, while providing a prestigious venue for the youngest galleries and the newest art. This year, FIAC will solidify its position as a major international fair by welcoming important dealers including Lisson Gallery, (London) Thaddeus Ropac, Yvon Lambert and Daniel Malingue (Paris), Michael Steinberg Fine Art and Timothy Baum (New York), and Galerie Michael Schultz (Berlin). Important newcomers are Air de Paris and Chantal Crousel, both in Paris; Hans Mayer (Dusseldorf); Micheline Szwajcer (Antwerp); Dello Scudo (Verona) and Erna Hecey, from Luxembourg.

50 CUTTING EDGE ART GALLERIES - NEW SECTION: FUTURE QUAKE (Hall 5.1)
FIAC 2004 will have an exceptionally strong showing by up-and-coming galleries featuring emerging artists, with a total of 53 galleries in the Perspectives and Future Quake sections combined. Future Quake, a new section at FIAC in 2004, will celebrate the energy and vision of the youngest galleries on the international art scene. With 20 galleries from around the world exhibiting the newest art, the Future Quake section will afford FIAC visitors the opportunity to discover tomorrow's art stars, while giving young artists international exposure.

The Perspectives section, launched at FIAC in 1996, has undergone a remarkable leap in its development, with 33 galleries this year (compared to 18 in 2003 and 14 in 2002), including 7 from France and another 26 from a dozen different countries. Perspectives features a number of special projects, group shows and solo exhibitions by emerging artists. Galleries new to this section will include Parker's Box of Brooklyn, NY; Florence Lynch Gallery and Slingshot Project of New York City; Aidan Gallery of Moscow; and Rubicon Gallery of Ireland - the first-ever Irish gallery to participate in FIAC.

NEW SECTION: FIAC/Design (Hall 4)
This year, FIAC will launch a section dedicated to high design, highlighting the close links between design and the visual arts. The galleries in the new FIAC/Design section will exhibit rare and one-of-a-kind pieces ranging from modern classics by Frank Lloyd Wright, Jean Prouve and le Courbusier to brand-new, never-before-seen series by leading contemporary designers Marc Newson, Mattia Bonetti, Johanna Grawunder and Ron Arad.

FIAC SPECIAL EVENTS
FIAC 2004 will host a number of special events, lectures and programs that will complement visitors' experience of the fair. Cafe des Arts, FIAC's annual forum for public discussion, will bring together artists, experts, curators, collectors and art critics for symposiums on major developments in contemporary art and the art market. Highlights include:

•Round tables examining the close links between the fine arts, design and fashion, with speakers including legendary designer Christian Lacroix

•Presentations by internationally-known curators iHou Hanru, Lorand Hegyi and Carlos Basualdo, among others

•Lectures examining issues such as "Drawing Today" and "Large-Scale International Exhibitions"

NEW FIAC CORPORATE ADVISORY SERVICE (Hall 5.1)
For the first time FIAC has developed a service for corporate collectors. At FIAC 2004, company leadership and art advisors are invited to participate in ArtClubCie to learn more about the new legal and tax benefits of starting or growing a corporate collection at FIAC. A series of "Art and Business" events will highlight the efforts by pioneering European companies who effectively carry out artistic and cultural projects in the business environment. Artists, corporate executives involved in art patronage and sponsorship, curators and business leaders will take part in daily roundtables on the subject from Thursday, October 21 through Sunday, October 24 at the Business Club, in Hall 5.1.
