Meditation/Mediation
Curated by Enrico Pedrini

The Andrea Meislin Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of sculpture, photographs, and video work by Daniel Rothbart. Rothbart’s sculpture addresses the relationship between nature and the sacred, while his photographs and video examine collective aspirations, artistic nomadism, and the spirituality often found in common environments.

Inspired by concepts in mystical Judaism and Buddhism, Rothbart’s recent sculpture explores issues of spirituality through a series of branchings drawn from forms in nature. In the words of curator Enrico Pedrini, “Rothbart’s work embodies a poetical surrealism drawn from the realm of myth, and his imagery develops out of the historical sedimentation of life experience and scholarship. His fantastic world of myth prompts one to reconsider the sacred as a point of interaction where icons and symbols converge and undergo changes of meaning.”

For years now Daniel Rothbart has carried twenty metal vessels of varying dimensions to different countries around the world. When he identifies an interesting environment, Rothbart arranges the vessels within it and documents the tableaux with photographs. His objects, thanks to the intervention of unpredictable outside factors, are filled with transient meanings that open them to new interpretations and effectively shift their meaning as signifiers. On view are photographs realized by Rothbart in different places (traveling circuses, public parks, streets and urban environments, and with itinerant merchants). Taken between March and April 2002, these photographs document an earlier phase of his project.

On view in the second gallery is a video loop of collaborative performance work realized by Rothbart between June 2003 and the present in Italy, France, Israel, and the United States. The work consists largely of improvisations with Rothbart’s vessel sculptures. Artist participants include Achille Bonito Oliva, Beni Cori, Christian Depardieu, Alan Jones, Hélène Jourdan-Gassin, Michael Kennedy, Francine Hunter McGivern, Sukran Moral, Yoko Ono, Enrico Pedrini, Lucio and Giordano Pozzi, Bernardo Skolnik, Carla Subrizi, and Junko Yamasaki.

Daniel Rothbart studied sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design and Columbia University. He held a Fulbright Hays Fellowship in Italy, a USIS Project Grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts grant, a La Napoule Art Foundation Residency in France, and a residency at the Herzliya Artist's Residence in Israel. Rothbart has exhibited widely in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, where his work is represented in public and private collections. Rothbart is the author of two books and has worked as the contributing Associate Editor of NYArts magazine and its European imprint Berlinerkunst since 1998. A monograph of Rothbart’s work is scheduled for publication by the Baruchello Foundation in Rome in March 2005. This is Rothbart’s third personal exhibition in New York City.
