PINDORAMA is the word coined by the Brazilian indigenous people for their land, the land of the palm trees. ENTRE means an invitation to enter, but also means in-between.

ENTRE PINDORAMA is an exhibition and event project that was conceived for the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart together with the Brazilian artist and dramaturgist Giogio Ronna The central theme of the exhibition is the presentation of and debate around contemporary Brazilian art. The project has been embedded in the Künstlerhaus yearly programme, due to it being about shifts in cultural identities and the breaking down of set conditioning. The two central terms are participation and empathy.

ENTRE PINDORAMA incorporates different positions from contemporary Brazilian art, which all move and find their expression within a very different context. The debate surrounding the ideas of the Antropofagia is not central, however it can be seen as a part of a cultural memory*.

At the same time, it is not about taking a further exotic look at a Latin-American country, but about growth and enrichment. ENTRE PINDORAMA sees itself as providing a chance to think about cultural codes from a different angle and perhaps to counteract the digestive problems of western social structures and to redress them. (Workshop with Ricardo Basbaum)

In addition to the exhibition there will be a series of lectures, which will present antropofage ideas and strategies and will explore its topicality and importance for a non-Brazilian audience.

An accompanying film programme shows the historical processes in the history of Berlin, the influence of antropofagia, later the tropicalismo of the sixties and seventies, and also the strategies of resistance during the dictatorship up until today in the context of the conflicts and problematic within Brazilian society. We can see prospects and continuity amongst other things in the development of a unique style in Brazil's hip-hop culture and we will be inviting the organizers of the hip hop festival Hutus, that was held in 2003 for the first time, to present a video programme.

This project is intended to be an initiative, to be continued in other places and institutions.

* Antropofagia was an intellectual movement in the twenties in Brazil, which had its roots in a very heterogenic group of poets, philosophers and artists, and whose ideas were recorded in the Manifesto Antropofagia by Oswald de Andrade. A poetic vision of cultural reformation that calls for us to seek a maximum of positive, warm interaction with the “other”, to recognise oneself in ‘others' and to completely absorb the ‘other', and if necessary spit out that which cannot be digested. This combination cannot fail to produce a pulsating vibrancy and regeneration.
The understanding of cultural production that accompanies this is influential for the next generation of Brazilian art. Central to nearly all of the productions is the questioning and disregard of cultural hierarchies, the drawing up of own territories, the combination of art and life, experimentation and participation.
